When I bought my 68 911 it came with one key that does not open the glove box. Since then I have been searching for a couple of new keys so I don't have to worry do much about loosing/breaking this one. But even when I do find some new ones I still have the problem that I cannot get into the glove box. Any suggestions on how do do so? I can't see anything I can undo from below that will let me get at the lock.

Earlier 911's came with 2 sets of keys black open all locks, red, called a valet key, only works in the doors and ignition.
Apparantly you only have the valet key. The solution is to get a locksmith to open and reset the tumblers to work with your key. Another option may be to try to get the correct black key from a dealer. If you can provide info as to the lock code this may be possible. ------------------ Bill Verburg My Home Page ![]() ![]() |

My glove box lock broke in my 85 leaving me in your shoes... After much effort all I could come up with was drilling out the back of the studs that attach the lower hinge to the car. Can't access the nuts with the door closed. I replaced them with simple bolts and all works fine.
Also it seemed to me that if you were a bit adventurous you could open the lock cylinder and move the little "things" from side to side to make it match your key... But then again your set up may be nothing like mine was? Happy Motoring, Jean-Paul |

This is going to sound stupid, but have you tried pulling on it really hard. I have a 1968 and the glovebox is held closed by magnets and it takes a really god tug to get it open. I thought mine was locked shut until I finally gave up and wentto pry it open, only to find out if was just hard to open.

If it IS a valet key issue, get a copy made that differs from the one you have. The usual change is a groove in the blank, compare your key to the blanks at the shop ( or dealer ).
I don't know for sure if things worked that way in '68, but that's always been the case with my locks. If not, don't pull the dash off when you give it a yank! ------------------ Charlie Baer '79 Euro 911SC |

Ahhhh.... pull real hard!. I've spent at least a couple hours trying to figure out how to break into my busted glove box, without making a mess, how to figure out if I have a valet key or a real key, etc.etc.etc......
I just pulled harder. Now I've got my original owners manual & some 10yr old hard as a rock touch up paint. Thanks addictionMS ! |
