Silly question: Which way does this go?
My fuel filler protector was getting a little crusty, so I decided to clean things up in the area and replace it.
But, which way does it go? I think the PO replaced mine some time in the distant past, and I don't know if he got it right or not. First pic? ![]() Second pic? ![]() Or, leave it off! ![]() |

surely 2nd pick is going to protect your paint more? The first one, will protect the inside of the filler cap?
Think my 3.2 is like the second pick....not a 100% sure though.

good question, as it's not apparent what exactly porsche was trying to protect with the extra flap. I suppose it depends on what the fuel nozzle is most likely to 'crash' into when fueling up. methinks that the fuel door might be more likely to get hit (so I'd choose pic 1). but then again, it's possible that Porsche was attempting to protect the paint from accidental nozzle 'stabbing'.
whatever ![]() aaaaanywaayyyy...

I think if it is like the second one it will get in the way of the latch closing. In the first you can just tuck it under the latch

This part has probably been superceded to a later one that fits many cars - thus the incomprehensible configuration. This is very common with many different parts for these cars...

On my current car and my previous 911, the setup was according to pic 1.

My setup was pic 2, but that never seemed quite right to me. |

Pic 1 on my 85. But I don't have a cap on the washer filler tube, so the flap protects that opening while fueling.

Picture-1 on my 76. First the flap facing down folds up & over the installed gas cap; next the flap to left folds over on top of - and holds down- the 1st flap. They take a set, and folded as above, everything stays in place while you fummble getting the steel fender flap closed. Fold in the alternate order and the lower flap tries to dangle out onto the fender before you can close the fender steel fender flap.

I moved mine to pic 1 some time ago due to the slow gas filling issue. As others have commented the ONLY way I can even lock the gas nozzle at the first detent is to have it enter "upside down" in other words I turn the nozzle upside down and when it enters the filler the nozzle is actually aimed to the front trunk...seems to cavitate less and sure speeds up filling. With the flap this way you can rest the filler nozzle against the flap instead of the door.

Pic 2 as it's designed to protect the paint.

Wow this is really helping you. complete disagreement. Just cant see the use of the Pic 1, it protects the inside of filler cap, where is the point in that?
got to be Pic 2. If you fold the flap near the catch down first, it wont get in the way.
