The new trans. Forward progress!

Well I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Depending on what turns out with the axles that arrive tomorrow, I will either use the Quaife, or the factory LSD.

I got the new gear stack on the aluminum case, and installed that cover. Today I will put on 5th and reverse. I also put in a new shift selector.

This job also required that I buy the "big dog monster earthquake" impact wrench. Should make getting off those axle nuts no problem.

The new gear stack:

Covered up now... Waiting for 5th and reverse...

This winter will bring another teardown and replacement of 2nd with a taller one. I still need to switch the clutch forks and shafts, and fabricate a mount for the clutch cable, as it look like this one was ground off by the road at some point... Darn prototype cars!

Tim...

Mechanically not that tough... The tough part was trying to figure out how to match an 83 case with custom gears, later trans hubsm earlier wheel hubs, etc.. Some items are no longer available from suppliers, etc.. If I could have just done the mechanical work, it probably wouldn't have been nearly as fustrating as it was.

Now mind you This required pulling the engine/trans, unmounting trans, disassembly of two gearboxes and reassembly of one "hybrid" box. A year ago I never would have attempted it, but after my race motor build, I figure sky's the limit.

Souk, you've got it all wrong...At the office they're probably saying "Chris isn't too bad at computers, for a Porsche mechanic/racer!"

Chris, I did find this info on the characteristics of the different 915s. It came from Dan Petchel

> The 915 saga
> 72-74 7/31 r/p,4-10mm bolt 2 pin corse spline flanges, mech speedo, straight clutch arm (called short box)
> 75 8/31 r/p, 4 10mm bolt 2 pin course spline flanges mech. speedo, clutch cable made a 90 degree turn
> 76-77 8/31 r/p, 4 10mm bolt 2 pin course spline flanges 10mm electric speedo start rear helper spring but not all had it.
> 78-83 8/31 r/p, 6 8mm bolt fine spline flanges electric speedo helper spring
> 84-86 8/31 r/p, 6 10mm bolt fine spline flanges electric speedo, notched bellhousing, helper spring

Before you go much further, have you test closed the trani and shifted through the gears? There is an art to getting the forks in just the right place, even though you follow the manual, they may be off a smidge, and require adjusting. I always put together the trani for a test shift, a few times before I seal it up for good.

Nice silver table in the background... My tranny is 30 years old and bolted to a 3.2 so I will probably be calling you next year for advice.

Bill, Thanks!

Jim, getting there... But I didn't move the shift forks except for 5th, which I marked on the shaft. However it WILL be tested before final assembly!

Just got the later stub axles from Oklahoma foreign. They were even nice enough to give me the bolts, thrust washers, and castle nuts...

The splines are the same and so are the measurements of length and diameter, so it looks like I am in business!
