Would you trade in your 911 for a BRAND NEW............???

Fellow 911 owners,

Interesting thing happened to me today. I went out to lunch with an old friend who happens to be a fleet car salesman for a local Nissan dealership. Previously he was the used car sales manager for a Porsche dealership.....No name mentioned....But boy...Did I ever enjoy my visits and vigerous test drives of their current inventory. Porsche lover heaven!!!

Today, he gave me a tempting offer. Either sell my beloved SC or trade in for a brand new 350Z track model. And he'd give it to me at his cost....Un-heard of for a 350Z....in which most people have to spend thousands over dealers invoice. TEMPTING. Especially after a test drive!

I was impressed. The car really does get up and go. And still has the look and feel of a traditional sports car. It is the very reminisant body lines of a 911, that attracted to me the car at first look....Just could they do something about the ugly door handles???

Is my beloved SC ready for pasture? Has my love for it's classic style, posh, not trendy image, true sports car handling and performace be traded for perhaps a NEW, don't have anything to do to it this weekend, except wash it, car?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm........as good as it sounds.........Not for me! I'll keep my SC ( already have planned buriel services with me in the driver seat) What about you? What would it take for you to give up your 911? Is there an offer too good to pass up?

Mike

I'd much rather have the Infiniti G35 Coupe in 6-speed with Sports Package over a 350Z.

But, I'd never take it over my Porsche (especially if I had to pay for it).

The only thing that could get me out of my Porsche would be another (air-cooled) Porsche.

The SCWDP continues to crumble at the hands of Nissan.

Maybe I am wrong but there does not seem to be any shortage of the 350's here in Dallas. An ad for Bankston claims they have 30, yes THIRTY, in stock.
Oh, and BTW, I would be very reluctant to get rid of my 911 for some trendy new something or other with nice a/c, nice interior, a full warranty, uhmmmm...I need to think about this.

Nope...I'll keep 'er. And buy a old '88 535i with an automatic. I'd still be out less. Assuming I can do a top end rebuild myself.
KEEP THE FAITH!

Interesting thread to me personally... The lease on my Infinity QX-4 suv was up last month and I took it to the dealership. They of course wanted me to get another Infinity. So I took a g-35 couple with the sport package for a test drive. Let me tell you, that is one nice car. Definately pricey but a nice car none the less. But its a new Infinity and I have a difficuly laying that kind of jack for a rice burner. I passed on the car and bought my '88 p-car instead. So today, on way home from getting new exhaust installed I actually ran through the gears with... well you guessed it at g-35 on my passenger door... Both cars were comparable and I only started to pull him in the top of the range. I felt pretty good about it since the hp of the infinity is considerably higher if memory serves. But then it hit me... in fourteen years will an Infinity still be able to do this without a lot of overhaul and effort and I decided I think not. I am so happy with my choice!!!!! But that is just my deal. Bottom line.. no way I would trade my p-car for a nissan. If you cant afford both... wait unitl you can or keep the car that was meant to last!

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul!

I'd trade my 84 for a Beck 550 replica. I just got the E and can't imagine ever trading that. I've gone up and down the new sports car/classic sports car ladder many times and one thing ALWAYS happens. 3-6 months after I get a new car, I sell it and go back to classic, Porsche (914s, 911s) since 1985, but prior to that it was all about 240Zs, still the best, most fun, most tossable, most affordable sports car of all time.

A 350Z? I don't think so.

Aaaaccckkk!!! I thought for a second there you were serious about the 350Z! Friends don't let friends drive Z-cars (unless there classic pre-80s models, of course).

I'd trade mine in for a GT3 in a second. I would also consider a C4S.

I'll keep my SC thank you, with registration fees going up My SC will still be affordable. For the price to put tags on one of the new cars I can buy NEW SSI's, much more fun.
Besides my neighbor bought a new 350Z and it didn't do anything for me, it's just not as cool as a older 911 IMO.
Cheers

I see tons of 14 year old Nissans on the road. I have never had a car other than the 911 where the transmission wouldn't outlast the rest of the car. I love to drive the 911, but get real. It's an old car with ancient, labor intesive technology. My econobox sedan Neon is just about as fast and has 240,000 miles. Still on the original engine, transmission and clutch. Extensively autocrossed, rallycrossed and drag raced.

lets see... I've wanted a porsche 911 since I was 10 and I've wanted a nissan since, well, never. so if you were to pay me enough to buy another 911 then I might consider it.

I know I'm gonna take some **** for this but I am a current 350z track model owner. The thing that will redeem me is I am selling it and am currently on the search for an SC or Carrera. So if you are really considering the move let me know and I can hook you up . Seriously though, I am finnally going to get my childhood dream car that I drove for one memorable day many many years ago and have not been able to reproduce in a long line of cars that I have owned in the last two years of searching. I bought an e46m3 and traded it for a 996 then sold it and bought the 350z. Now I am saying screw all the modern technology I want what I originally fell in love with.

Go KRichard!

What is your opinon of the 996?

Yep the '80s cars are simple to own and have already done their depreciating.

Porsche Crest

I'd keep the Porsche. After owning my Porsche for 19 years, I've seen several "replacements for the Porsche" come and go. Car magazines touted the Mazda RX7, Acura NSX, 300 ZX turbo, and several others as the "most recent competitor" to the Porsche and gave them all the accolades. 24 years later, mine is still a Porsche and the others are...well old with no magazine coverage.

Well perhaps the NSX but you pay for that one.

My SC sounds better, and pulls stronger than when I bought it. Besides, in Kansas, we have a personal property tax that's based on the depreciated value of the car. So while some here pay $600 to $800 a year in taxes on a new car, mine is like $37 a year, since it's fully depreciated on the books by now.

The 996 was a very nice and refined car. Loads of power and a warranty to boot. The thing I don't like about them is they are too refined. The steering is over boosted. The interior is way to nice Mine even had cup holders. What is the world coming to? They are nice but not what I wanted in a Porsche. I think I poped the hood on it twice in a year. I want to be able to get dirty and know my car in and out and I didn't get that with the 996. Oh well it got plenty of looks and I guess that counts for something right???

The longer I look at the 350Z, the less it looks like a 911.

I think that almost anyone with a Y chromosome started wanting a 911 when they were a kid. At some point in their life, some of those people achieved their dream. Not long after the purchase though, some percentage of the owners realize the dream is better than the reality, and the 911 is replaced by something newer/faster/comfier/etc. For the ones that are left, the reality is there is no substitute for the flat 6.
