Automatic Climate Control
My 1980 911 SC has the auto climate. First off, does that little nipple like thing between the sun visors have anything to do with it? Its broken and just about ready to fall off. Secondly, I don't think the system is working. Is it worth looking into to fix, or is it pretty much pointless? If pointless, does the temp control dial affect anything, and can I still do all the same temp functions without the auto control?

The little "nipple" thing between the visors is the cabin temperature sensor for the system.
Others have fixed the system, but the parts tend to be really expensive (Porsche -- duh!). I gave up and converted the hand lever to a manual system. Works fine, but you have to fiddle with it as you drive, especially in traffic with the engine RPM constantly varying. |

When the auto climate system is functioning properly, is it a good operating system, or is it marginal at best and I should just operate it manually?

It works really well. It constantly adjusts the position of the red handle based on the interior temp and the temp of the heated air coming in at the heater flapper valve from the heat exchangers. (There's another temp sensor at the heater flapper valve.) Manual operation means you will be adjusting it --little motions-- every so often. I do not find that to be annoying, but automatic is nice!

The system works great when all the components are functional.
Call Ottos in Venice, CA. He can provide parts or rebuilt units. You can do a Google search under "Climate Control Unit" and possibly find other sources. Good Luck Loren '88 3.2
