930 turbo engine in 73 RS intercooler problem

im looking to fit a 930 turbo engine in my 73 RS lookalike (actually a 68) some people tell me that i must run the whale tail for the intercooler but i really dont want to. is there any reason why i can't run the intercooler on the outside of the RS engine cover or does anyone think i could have another one fabricated to fit under the RS cover? I know an intecooler on the outside of the RS engine may sound a bit odd but i kind of like the idea.
also, any ideas on how much power gain the intercooler achieves?

thanks

Andy UK

You are limited on the placement of the intercooler...and it's nearly impossible to stuff it in the engine compartment without a whaletail. The whaletail actually helps to divert air through the intercooler, which if blocked off, would not be effective as a cooler. You also need to be carefull that you don't locate the intercooler too far from the turbo, otherwise lag will be big issue. If I was starting from scratch, I would model my intercooler like the 3.3 or a later full bay model.

Without an intercooler you do loose power but not so much because of the cooling affect to the air, but because with an intercooler you can run higher boost. Therefore you can probably run it without but you'll have to really limit yourself on how much boost the car runs.

There is a fellow living in Portland, Oregon that has turbo charged 2.7 in his 1975. I believe he adapted an intercooler from a Mazda RX-7 to fit under the factory engine cover. It is a really nice looking installation. He posted some pictures a couple of months back. Maybe a search will turn something up? I wish I could help with more details....

One problem with running the intercooler on the outside would be, opening the engine cover. You would have to disconnect the intercooler some how every time you open the hood.

RUF did it on the yellow bird. Major fab work I would imagine but worth a thought.

There is a beige coupe (74 iroc look) running around nor cal area. if memory serves correctly, it has a custom intercooler in the duck tail (which was suitably modified to clear the cooler) the intercooler stuck out slightly out of the tail
how about a water cooled /intercooler set up? Spearco sells intercoolers of different sizes for custom applications. the water cooling system (ala 934) adds weight and plumbing, but the major horsepower gain sure offsets the heavier components
Be prepared for a LOT of fabrication to do a clean job.
Maybe you would be satisfied with a 300 hp n/a 3.6 conversion, rather than the expense of the turbo install

Yellowbird (also "mit radio!") had SC size flares where they cut NACA-style ducts to feed fresh air across the intercoolers.

There was a recent thread 1-2 weeks ago where we were pondering water vs air to air intercooling and ways to not mount a tail, somebody posted a nice pic of a pair of evil-looking air-air black units that fit under a flat lid.

found it: 73 RS intercooler thread

The NACA ducts were only used on the original Yellow Bird. They didn't work. Alois Ruf said they placed them in a low pressure area (by accident) and the air came out instead of in.
