3.6 enigne conversion questions

I am in the preliminary stages of planing my 3.6 conversion and just have a few questions I am sure you 3.6 guys can help with. Like I said I really am at the beginning stages and I am sure more questions will follow so any help is much appreciated. I do not have the car yet but it will probable be either a 1972/73 model. The motor is a 1993 964.

Did you fit the charcoal canister in the rear wing for the collection of the unburnt fumes? If not do you just blank of the outlets?

Can I use the fuel pump which came out of the same car as the motor, if so where is the best place to fit it. I am hoping it will go where the original one is in a 72/73 car?

I have an 69-73 S oil tank, thermostats and brass lines, will this system work with a 964 motor in the back on the car, as I know there is not much space and the S thermostats is in the engine bay? I hope to be able to fit after market oil cooler (or 2) up front.

If I use the 964 four pots on the front should I also use them on the rear to place out the braking efficiency of the car ? and will these all fit on their discs and then also in 15 inch fuchs ?

There is already a carbon canister in '72-72 no?
here is the connection for it on a 964, hose #1


The fuel pump requirements are very modest, a CIS pump is way overqualified but works fine because surplus fuel is just returned to the tank. I don't know the specs on the MFI pumps, do they even have a return line?

Chuck will have to respond on the oil issue, there is not a lot of excess room in the engine spaces.

I have never done the 964 calipers in 15s. The 930s work, so probably. To do it right you will need the 304x32 930 rotors front and 309x28 930 rotors rear, f/r 964 calipers and a 23mm ATE m/c

Thanks for your response Bill,

I am not sure if a 72 car has a carbon canister, (anyone know?) if it doesn't then do I need to fit one.

As for fuel pumps I have the pump out of the donor C4 car and was wondering if others have used this pump and can I mount it under the fuel tank?


Thanks for the brake info, I will use the 964 front and rear brakes plus the rotors and M/C you suggested but do you know how much extra that will place the 15 inch rim out of the wheel arch? If it's quite a lot then I may have to reconsider this option, as I want to retain the original look.

Alan,

I put a 15" phone dial onto the front of the 90 C4 parts car. The wheel did fit, but not much room btwn the caliper and the wheel. IMHO, I would go with a set of 16" 911 wheels (Fuchs, Phonedials etc)

The fuel system specs for all the M64 series engines are as follows
  • min flow 1700 cm3/min
  • Fuel Pressure 3.8 &#177 0.2 bar
  • control value ~3.3 &#177 .2 bar
  • residual min after 20min 3.0 bar

All the t/ps that I know of are using the CIS pumps
  • min flow 2000cm3/min
  • System pressure 4.5 -5.2bar

I vaguely remember dealing w/ a carbon canister on my '72 but the was a long time ago.

As Jim said the 964calipers on 930rotors fit in 15" rims about the same as 930 calipers. It's real close but doable. A reminder bigger brakes won't help much w/o bigger tires.
