A Flowmaster for 993 headers? Maybe!
This looks pretty good. If you have struggled with this, the problem is that the manifold collectors empty at an odd angle and very close to the bumper. This (new) Flowmaster is only 4" thick and looks like it will tuck up behind the bumper nicely and the inputs appear perfectly placed. It should be a simple thing for a competent muffler shop to fit. What do you think?

That looks like what I have on my car, a 1973 with a 993 engine. It was done by Mufflex in Trenton NJ.

I have just got the Flowmaster catalogue and I am planning the same kind of set up, 993 headers with custom made flow master, the onlydifference is that I would like to retain the single LH side outlet
Keep us up to date with your findings/plans as I am very intertested. Alan.UK |

Moses,
I am running dual flowmaster delta force mufflers on my 993 based 3.8 and they are very loud. They made a huge difference in top end power, bottom end didn't suffer at all. I would post an MPEG but I don't have any server space anywhere. Email me and I'll send you the MPEG, it is 5.24 MB. |

I'm havinga tough time visualizing how that will fit. For comparison here is mine w/ a 24" overall(18"can) Flowmaster
![]() Here is stock ![]() maybe if the inlets on the proposed Flowmaster are rotated 90°?

Agreed, trying to keep the inlets off of the ground and elbow to them from headers/HE's would be a mighty tight bend.

I will get my car on the lift in a few hours and post some pictures. As far as noise goes it is a nice sound. Previous to this setup I ran just the stock cat with the ends cutoff and turned about 180 degrees and welded back on. That setup was too loud. I had to wear earplugs driving to the track to keep my sanity. With the flowmaster my wife and I can hear the stereo, and I was never blackflagged at Limerock last month during a DE. The noise limit is now 89db there and I seem to have been below that. The only issue is that the bumper gets real hot with this muffler up there.

OK after looking at it on the lift I can see the muffler is a little different. The inputs are further out towards the end of the muffler. This is a flowmaster muffler. I don't know the number, but I know it was fairly expensive. I think it is one of their racing applications. My muffler shop welded on the support bracket and the O2 sensor bung.

Pete, That's EXACTLY what I thought the install would look like. Seems like a simple solution. A Monty or other banana muffler will not fit behind my bumper.
How loud is it for street use? Do you set off car alarms at startup? Please give me as much info as you can.

i remember an old article in a Hot Rod type of magazine where they tested the flow of a few mufflers, and for the heck of it tested them in reverse flow. a few were worse , a few about the same, and some (the bottle type glasspacks if i remember correctly) actually flowed better!!
if this muffler flowed alright in reverse, you could do an installation like the sport muffler: ![]() the 9+ inch width would probably run you out of room though ![]() (i'm sure no one minds taking a look at Iris again! ![]() max

It is loud, but not obnoxious. As I said I passed the 89 DB limit at Limerock. Prior to this I had a 3.2 in the car with a bursch type muffler. It is about the same, maybe a tad bit louder now. Overall I think it sounds good.

I just called my muffler guy to ask what the part number is. He doesn't really Know !! He said to call Flowmaster direct at 800-544-4761 and ask for Rodney. Tell him what you are trying to do. My guy thinks it is the muffler from the Camaro kit. Not a Camaro muffler, but the one from the Camaro kit. There is a difference. Before he put it in I saw it at his shop. The inlet pipes came out of the muffler then bent up at 90 degrees. This is a little different from the picture you posted intially. My guy cut them off anyway to match them up to the 993 flanges. He used the flanges off of my cat, so it was destroyed in the process.
