Which speakers for rear deck
I'd like to replace the speakers on the rear deck myself and am looking for recommendations. I understand there is little clearance so a "low profile" speaker is in order. Which one did you install? Did you do it yourself? Did you rewire or use existing wiring? What perils must I be aware of before undertaking this job? Crutchfield isn't much help because they can't guarantee the fit. Thanks for your input.

Although I installed 6x9's in my own rear deck by slightly enlarging holes made by the P.O., I think there is a 4x6 replacement that doesn't require any cutting. I think it's a Blaupaunt.

I just put Kenwood Excelon 4x6's in my 83SC. THey have the best frequency response on any 4x6 I could find.www.crutchfield.com
I also wert to Wal-Mart and got some Poly stuffing for pillows and stuffed my rear deck and added a 1 7\8" cardboard enclosure surrounding the speaker mainly to keep the stuffing away from the speaker. This really tightened up the bass ! My holes in the deck were widened as well, there are 6x9's in them. My personal idea of an ideal sound package would be to hook up a multi channel amp to power 4 speakers and 1 sub. Hook all the speakers up to the one amp then use a small bazooka tube as your sub and mount in the truck close to the cabin. Should make for a mean sound output.

I went with some Memphis 4x6's that have dome pivoting tweeters. They fit right in the openings except at the corners. Just had to trim the corner of the speaker frames with some sheetmetal snips to get a nice fit. They came with high pass crossovers that I tucked under the deck. Held them in place with some double sided tape.
My system is a mix-and-match setup because i'm kinda cheap. The head unit is a Blaupunkt Miami Beach CD converted to preamp outputs (I did this because the newer Blaupunkts are kinda cheesy IMO). I have a Denon DCA 800 6 ch. amp, 50W per channel powering the four standard location speakers and a "custom" sub box that's currently secured to the folded down passenger rear seatback. The front speakers are Soundstream Granite 5-1/4" separates. The rear speakers are the aforementioned Memphis 4x6's with pivoting tweeters. The sub is a 8" Memphis studio subwoofer mounted in a 1/2" plywood, 0.75 cu. ft. sealed box stuffed with fiberglass insulation. It sounds solid, but is by no means a killer stereo system. Like I said, it's kind of a makeshift setup from all sorts of components i've collected over the years. It works and sounds 20 times better than the original junk. There's some guys on here (bell, RoninLB, SteveW, .......) who are full-on audio guys with killer systems in their cars. I think they ditched the rear deck speakers due to their bad location for sound imaging.
