Question Loop Cooler or Not?

This winter I am going to install a different 2.7 (E cams/40IDA Carbs) into my 77.
My question has to do with the cooling system. I intend to use the loop cooler presently in place but I have noticed that some years previous to the 77 didn't have a loop cooler system. So what type of cooling system was used?
I live in Anchorage and drive my car on warm sunny days. Emphasis is on warm and not hot most days it's 65-70f.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

My '74 didn't have a front cooler at all. I think it was an option back then. I got one used and had it installed. It made a difference, but if I had kept the car, I would have installed a Carrera style radiator cooler.
