Now that you looked, just wondering how many like the whaletail.
I have been kicking around the idea of removing mine. I didn't really like the tail all that much on a carrera before I got my car but it really grew on me. I still think about taking it off sometimes but I think if I did i would go to a new deck lid with the powered spoiler.

Jerry, do you mean the Turbo tail or the normal 3.2 Carrera tail? Either way, I am leaning toward the tail-less look myself and currently still have the Carrera tail.
They sort of make the car look too eighties. A bit ponytail and a moustache if you know what I mean. And all the crap the others will chime in about aerodynamics is just that. Ducktails on the other hand are the new black.

I prefer no tails, only duck tails on the early 911 cars. I think the tails just take away from the nice lines the Porsches have.
But everyone has their likes and dislikes, so do what you like best. Simon

If you must have tail...keep it descrete...
and if you are not tracking your car...duck tail is the way to go IMHO. Otherwise; return to the beautiful wingless, original good looks that came with it's heritage.
Go for big hips and wide feet if you need a statement. Just me and my $.02 Shawn.

or less tail actually. Early 911S registry thread about super rare carrera RS ducktail delete option.
Here Sweet car. Shawn.

I went back and forth on putting one on. I even had one ordered and then canceled it. Best solution - buy a second deck lid and mount the tail on it since you have to drill to mount (at least on 3.2 whale tail that I know of). That way you can switch when you desire to do so. Gives a buyer a nice option when you decide to sell also. By-the-way, I am on the no tail side of this thread.

Well, If any of you all want to sell your tail, let me know. I am looking to pick one up.

The aerodynamics of the tail are not crap in combination with the front air dam. If you take off the rear...take off the front. If your car ever sees the track or high speeds...this post is headed in the wrong direction. I do agree that the whaeltail takes a little getting used to on a non-widebody car, looks a bit out of place. As far as the eighties go..... a Carrera is well, an eighties car.

Victor -
Try driving faster. It will be a great lesson in aerodynamics. Then do a search here and look up the graphs that show the aerodynamic benefits of tail vs. no tail. If you intend to drive at high speeds, in particular on a track, you will want the tail. The difference on the track with my SC tail vs. no tail is night and day - and I am only using a duck tail.

I guess I'm in the pro-tail category. Of course that may be because I need somewhere to stuff all the extra bits needed to go extra-stupid-fast

Go tail... I really don't care for the tail-less look except on the long-noses...

so it doesn't help at high speeds to add a chin spoiler but no tail? i heard that it does. as far as the tail goes, it's pretty evident how i feel from my username (no tail = nice posterior). i think targas and narrowbodies look slightly askew with tails attatched. anyway, targas get so loud in the triple digits that i rarely go up over 110 mph in the first place. if i had a coupe, though, i'd definitely think about a duck or a whale, in that order. do you guys happen know of any targa owners with duckbills?

Isn't that a Targa with a ducktail about nine posts up in the thread?

The classic lines of a pre impact 911 are tail-less perfection.
the duck spoiler looks dead right on a Carrera RS. the impact 911's need a spoiler, in my opinion they just look a little odd without one. I have contempated taking mine off and replacing it with a 964 electric spoiler, but then I may as well replace the bumpers at the same time... hey presto I know have a 964 look 87 carrera. If I took it off all together I will always think I should have bought a 2.4S. Keep it on - your Porsche likes it, if it didnt it would have been in some rear end smashes to get you thinking! yeah, i just realized that jack. sorry. i also found a ton of older threads with good targa/duck pics was coming back to edit that out of my post. you beat me though. but what about my front spoiler question...anyone know?
Edit: maybe 3.2 targas w/ducks aren't so bad after all...

Well I think it is a given that a 930 should have a tail. Back before I knew the difference I thought all p-cars with whaletails were turbos or something that was added on. I do like them both ways but my car came with the tail and the chin spoiler.
I probably won't track my car so it isn't really an issue with aerodynamics. Besides I would keep the tail in case I ever wanted to go back. As for ducktails I think they look fine on a long nose but it looks a little funny on a carrera. Hey to each his own. I think I will mull it over a while longer before I do anything

But the fastest circuit we run on only goes to about 220KPh so maybe above those speeds, youre right.

Here is the graph showing the impact of a ductail versus no tail at all. Pretty dramatic at relatively low speeds, it should be pretty noticeable to the driver:

Heck ya I love tail, but I don't think about as much as I did twenty years ago.
I love the way my factory tail looks & the car feels solid as a train at triple digits.
