Will a 930 Fit on a U-Haul Car Transporter?

I'm roadtripping to Chicago-area this Friday night to fetch the new 930. I may be able to borrow a fellow Pelican (and longtime friend's) 911/930 trailer, but if that falls through, I'm curious if anyone has pulled a 930 for a good distance on a U-Haul trailer, and if it'll fit.

'Tho it's in great condition, driving it back is not an option right now, so don't torment me with taunts to drive it back.

In the alternative, if anyone in LI/NJ area's got a reliable trailer that'll haul a 930 that they're not using this weekend, please send me a PM.

Thanks in advance, guys.
JP

I fit my very low 911 on a Uhaul car transporter. Had 2 problems:

1. Watch out for the front spoiler when putting it on the trailer. I nearly ripped mine off.
2. You cannot use the front tire straps that are on the trailer. They wont fit around the tire. I used some tie down straps to secure the front.

Terry,
are the straps too narrow for a 930? They worked just fine on my 15x6's

I remember a friend being told last year he couldn't rent a UHaul trailer for his car because his Durango (a big SUV) didn't weigh enough.

Check you tire track width. The wider track may be an issue. If this is ok, just watch the front valance. You can use some 2x4's to help decrease the angle.

I have 16x6 on the front. It was more the fact that I couldn't pull the car all the way on the trailer due to the front spoiler. They would not reach over the tire.

Yes, but do exceed the posted 45 MPH sticker on the u-haul fender. The u-haul police will get you...

Thanks, guys. This may be the way it's got to be done.

BGC32 -- "do" exceed? If I don't exceed 45 mph it's going to be a loooong trip back from Chicago to Long Island... like double the time getting out there.

l33t9eek -- their instructions say to load the "heavy" end towards the front of the trailer. Did you have any issues towing with the "light" end forward?

JP,
I actually had the oposite problem. The car is so small most of the weight is forward of the axles so you get too much tonge weight. We had to move the car far back as we could to get the right distribution.

Those UHaul trailers are some heavy puppys. At least the older steel ones.

When I had rented one, they wanted to know I had a class 3 hitch. Guess they don't want it hooked to someones bumper. That thing weighed more than the car.

Towed a 930 from Northern California to Southern, not with a UHaul but a very fancy aluminum trailer from a CalURent. I looked at Uhaul's trailer and although it may carry a 930, it looked like crap and unsafe relative to the other one. (keyword: "looked"). I know, I know, I saw the chains, the hooks, etc.)

UHaul will only rent for a full day. CalURent will rent for 3 hours at $39.00 (i.e., get it before between 4:30 and 5:00, keep it overnight, and return it as soon as they open). Big savings.

I know my info is somewhat UHaul unrelated, but a) in case u want to visit their site and other joints may carry same model, b) just want everyone to know about possible loophole savings, and c) in case fellow SoCal Pelicanites want to consider CalURent.

Uhaul will rent one way and it's much cheaper to actaully do it that way. My one way from WV (picked it up on the way) to NC was $118 for 4 days. If you rent local it gets expensive. Just pick up a trailer on the way if you go uhaul

The tire straps should fit. I used a U-Haul to move my 914 with 7 & 8 inch Fuchs and they fit no problem. I would be more concerned with the width of the rear fenders than anything else. Also, be sure to fold down the driver's side fender on the U-Haul before opening the car door. It can leave a nasty ding on your door. (don't ask me how I found out...)

U-Haul has a bunch of different trailers....and they are notorious for not having the reserved one when you get there. Ugh...then they make you wait while they get one from "across town". Right...It's actually across the county! My experiences with them have been miserable.

I used a Hertz trailer for my trip from Newport Beach to CT, and they dropped their pants pricewise when I mentioned "U-Haul". Nice trailer, light, but the ramp was full width and was a huge barn door aerodynamically. Fuel economy was not pretty. I actually used some 2 x 6s to help clearance, and loaded backwards, got good tongue weight, and used my own straps. I tied to the suspension as thats a personal thing of mine, but lots of people like to tie to the body and pull it down. As the trailers suspension is minimal, I don't like the shocks it would subject the car to.

Size wise most open trailers will be more than big enough.

U-Haul wanted $550 for a trailer one-way NorCal to Midwest when brand new one are $1500-3500. Also there were such severe tow-vehicle restrictions, it sounded like a shady way of bumping truck rental sales.
Almost cheaper to tow it once and sell it.
