13.4 @ 106mph

I'm not a street-racing kind of guy at all, and I'll probably blow out my 915 if I keep doing it...
...but I just had to find out what my new 930 engine-transplant toy would do. I'm pretty happy with the results (average of 4 GTECH runs, 2 in each direction).

13.4 @ 106MPH
Kills Bugs Fast.

I saw the Cayenne on Car&Driver - the show. The Turbo model has 400+ HP and 475 lb/ft of torque. They said it does 0-100 in 12.9 seconds, faster than the Boxster S, or maybe that was the quarter mile. 12.9 second 1/4 mile sounds too fast for the heavy Cayenne. Anyway, 13.4 secs. sounds mighty impressive. It sounds like hotrod S, SC, and Carreras with turbo engines really do produce great straight line performance.

What does a 3.6 in a 74-89 produce for 1/4 mile? Just wondering.

Colin,

No problem, Glad to help.

What kind of launch did you do to get those #'s? And what clutch and pressure plate are you using? My clutch is wearing out again. I tried to do some 0-60 runs and the launch was hard to do.

Dean,
I had to beat the hell out of the car to get the numbers, and won't do it again. I got a lot of practice launching turbo cars when I had a 300ZX-TT, which is good, because I'm sure I'd break this one quickly with repeated attempts. I'll be happier with easier launches and times around 14 seconds. That still feels fast enough (to me) to be entertaining. I should also mention one of the seats was out, so weight should be ~2400lbs.

For these launches, I slipped in the clutch really quickly as I revved through about 4k RPM. It was the only way to get some boost built up at a standstill. Rear tires are only 205s, and they lit up until hooking up at around 5.5K. I shifted wayyyy more quickly than I should into 2nd and third, too. Crunch.

Clutch and aluminum pressure plate are from a brand new Sachs Sport kit from Pelican. I also put in a new stock flywheel. I have not noticed any slippage yet.

Colin,

I had a stock clutch in my car when I first did the swap. It lasted only 7k miles. Now I have the stock 930 clutch with the G50 and it feels 3/4's worn out in less that 5k miles. I will be curious to see how long your clutch lasts. One of my problems is I keep modifying for more power

Enjoy your car

Fun to here Colin, that is a really good 1/4 mile time, if i understand it right you have a original 3.0 930 engine in your "rocket" right?

Nice to now the parts stay together after a race like that!

Just a quick followup to this whole quarter mile thing: a friend of mine works at a PG&E yard with an accurate drive-on scale, and we took our 911s down there this morning.

-tar-less interior
-RS carpets and door panels
-both seats installed
-no AC, no ventilation fans
-quarter tank of gas
-front FG RSR bumper with aluminum bumper shock replacements

The car weighs in at 2340 lbs with no driver. I was surprised it was that light. I'm starting to appreciate this "just add lightness" idea!

EDIT: PS: his '83 SC with no modifications except a set of BBS 16" rims weighed 2660 with no driver.

I'm surprized you had to slip the clutch for a good launch.
With the short gears of the 915 I can launch the turbo motor the same way I did when the 3.0L SC engine was back there. The only difference is the 1-2 shift must be anticipated before the motor hits the rev limiter @ 7200RPM. The accelleration is violent for first and second gear. Third is controllable.
The combo of a mildly modified 3.3T motor in an SC with a 915 puts this car deep in the 12s. I'm using a Sachs Sport Clutch with no issues in the year it's been in.

Hi Rarly,
The only thing I can think of is that mine is 3.0 and non-intercooled, so maybe it does not have the torque of your 3.3? Are you running a stock turbo? I also seem to remember you have SC cams?

I slipped the clutch in really quickly, just a bit slower than a "normal" launch, so maybe my description is misleading. But it definitely does not launch like my friend's SC. It is fairly easy to bog off the line if there's no boost in sight. But when that turbo spins up...oh, man.

In any case, I'm really glad to hear you Sachs setup is working well. I know you drive yours hard, and it seems to hold up to it.
