Cluch adjustment help
Out in the garage trying to perform my first clutch adjustment, per "101 projects" and having a problem-
- can't seem to get enough clearance on the small lever arm with the cluch cable disconnected, to get close I have to back off the adjustment bolt until it hits the heat exchanger. - I've also noticed that the lock nut on the adjusting bolt is on the same side of the small lever arm as the head- contrary to the pix in "101" , should I put it on on either side?. This will change the relative position of the small arm significantly. Is that OK? - The coil spring attached to the small lever appeas to be stetched( last coil pulling out ) , could this be caused by the mispositioned adjustment bolt.? I should probably get a new one. I'll move the adjustment nuts and try again, but I'd like some inputs first. ( this is a little disappointing as my wrenc h did the last clutch adjustment) Help appreciated. |

If you can't get the 1.2 mm clearance by backing out the adjustment bolt on the small lever arm, there's a likelihood that your clutch disk is thin. Mine was adjusted all the way out (and hitting the heat exchangers like you note) so that the tip of the bolt was flush with the arm and the clutch was almost down to the rivets.
The lock nut goes on the same side as the bolt head -- I really can't visualize it on the other side and having enough length to hit the heat exchanger. The only thing I can think of is that your adjustment bolt has been replaced with one that's longer. Do you have a picture? Chris.

Chris,
My clutch has only about 21K miles on it, only about 800 miles of DE. Shouldn't be at the rivets. To clarify, my car has the lock nut on the same side as the bolt head and hits the heat exchanger as I try to adjust. But if you look at "101" projects and other threads in this forum you'll see the lock nut on the other side. It would seem that this would result in less clearance (or even interference)with the small lever arm but I'm out of ideas. Gerry |

i noticed on my carrera that the helper spring on the tranny was a little too much compressed, and out of adjustment......which kept the clutch from completely engaging....
i never had to mess with the pedal area. why are you adjusting? is it slipping when hot?
