Porsche Crest Oil dipstick

Need help!! I have just purchase a 1976 911S with the original 2.7 engine. The oil dipstick was missing when I pick up the car. So, I went to a Porsche junk yard, but they don't have the correct one, the guys convinced me that the one he have is the same.

So, here is the detail, according the factory part list, the part number for the dip stick for my car is 930.107.731.00, but the one I purchased is 930.107.731.01, which suppose to be for a newer 911. Can anyone tell me if the one I got will give me the correct oil level too?

The overall length for the 930.107.731.01 is 29.5cm (11.6 inches), and the max level marking is at 21cm (8.3 inches), and min. level is at 27cm (10.6 inches) from the top/loop.

How long is your 930.107.731.00? And where are the level marks?

Thanks for your advise in advance.

I'd bet a Hamilton that your dip stick is in the oil tank. You'll still need a new one.

I have yet to drop my dipstick into the oil tank. I wander why I is not retrievable with a telescopic magnet or some tie wire with a hook at the end? Or is it?

Sure it's retrievable, just depends on how lucky you get fishing for it. About 2-3 years ago I read a post by a guy (maybe on Rennlist?, Porschelist?, Porschefiles?) who spent the better part of an afternoon fishing for and retrieving his dipstick ... THEN he found out it could have stayed in the tank without causing a problem AND he could have bought a new one for about 10 bucks. It was an amusing story.

I'd bet it's in there. At least one. The guy in the story could have saved time by removing the oil level sending unit, after draining the tank, of course.

Looks to me like they are both listed as possibly the correct dipstick. It depends on which oil level sender you have. I'm not sure how to tell the difference. Maybe somebody can chime in. I'm interested, too. I've never been convinced of my dipstick nor my guage readings because I have a 74 car with a 77S motor. Here's the link from PP's site that states there are two different senders....

Can anyone explain how we can tell which sender we have?

Jim is right.
There is probably at least one d'stick in the tank already. But you risk damaging the (delicate) level float mechanisim if you go fishing for it.

Fact, inference, and speculation: I replaced the level sender in my 77 911 with the "new" version. I also dutifully ordered the new dipstick. There was no visibly discernable difference between the old sender and the new. At first, the two dipsticks looked the same, too. A closer look showed that the level markings on the dipsticks were different. The markings on the new dipstick were further down toward the tip of the stick. A tank that registered "full" on the new dipstick would register as being down about a liter on the old stick. I'd infer that to correlate with the new dipstick, the new sender is calibrated to show full when the old sender would have shown mid-gauge. Why? Did Porsche find a legitimate reason to reduce the tank level that it considers to be "full"? Did they tire of customers bringing in their cars for warranty service because they found oil in their CIS boxes and dripping out of the CIS overflow because of slight overfilling? When did the supercession occur? Was, as there almost always is, there a service bulletin describing the change and the reason for same? Who was behind the grassy knoll? Speculate away?

They are definitely retrievable. I had to replace my level sending unit, or so I thought....As it turned out, a previous dipstick was hung up on the sender causing an erroneous reading. But hey, now I have two dipsticks and a new sender!

The OEM dipstick in my car, which should be a 930.107.731.00, is 11 5/8" long with the low mark 1 1/8" from the tip and the full mark 4 1/16" from the tip. The 930.107.731.01 that I have is the same length but the low and full marks are 7/8" and 3 1/4" respectively from the tip.

Thank you for the measurement, looks like as long as I have the oil level at the middle, I will be OK.

Darn, I just had my sending unit off to replace the leaky gasket; and, I didn't think to stick my digits in there to look for a spare dipstick. At least I got 16 years of crud off the sending unit.
