Value of a roller?
Any advice on how to value a roller?
I'm looking at '77 930 roller tomorrow. It has everything but the engine. Any idea how to value something like this? I want to be very fair with the guy if I buy it but I don't know where to start. Is there a market for a '77 930 transmission? Supposedly they are desireable because they are "short" but I've never seen a "WTB: short 930" in the classifieds. thanks, Chris

I've seen roller prices all over the board. This sounds like more than a roller. For a 930, if everything is in great condition less the motor I may pay $8-10K. But everything, including paint and interior, would have to be in great condition. If you figure a motor and install would be about another 8-10K you have the market value of about $16-20K.
If the "roller" needs paint, interior or other items I would subtract accordingly. For a roller that needed paint and other items refreshed I would probably go no more than $4K. I never bought a roller, but this may give you an idea of how someone else would go about it.

I would say treat it like a whole car and then subtract the cost of replacement engine and installation from the value. So if a 77 930 is worth $20K in good condition I would then say subtract about $10 for a replacement engine (roughly $7k for motor and $3K for labor). That will get you close to the value of the roller. If you pay too much for the roller, then when you get it together you will have more into it than it is worth. Likewise, if you can find a deal on a motor, and do the labor yourself you may have a really cheap 930. However, your time to you is also worth something.
These types of situation are always difficult to assess, but it can be done. Just do your homework before you make an offer, just like on a whole car. Hope that gets you started.

Thanks guys.
Is there any discount for the "uncertainty/risk" factor of buying a non-running car? -Chris

Well if its not running because its got no drivetrain, I'm not sure what other sigificant suprises you could find.
Gauges not working? Perhaps. Electrical? Again, perhaps. Not sure what the discount for slight risks like that would be. You could do basic tests on the gauges (ie, ground them, as appropriate, to make sure needles move). You could push the roller to make sure there's no weird suspension noises, I guess. You could probably eyeball those. I'd be tempted to pay some cash for a PPI-like checkup, anyway, to make sure the frame is straight, etc... that the car is in alignment or can be put into alignment, since that sort of thing is easier to tell when you're driving it.

There is a '73 RSR replica roller listed for $8,000 in the August and September issues of Panorama. I cannot remember the details but I believe it's yellow, has coilovers and maybe jzr? shocks?

If the price is right I may be able to use the tranny! I have enough tranny at the moment, but I am also LAZY at the moment. How many miles? History? Rebuilt? |

Chris,
What do you plan to do with car, it doesn't affect what it's worth but you might want to consider other alternatives. The 77 is somewhat less valuable since is has the smaller S brakes and ran the non-intercooled motor. My guess is you could find a 76-77 930 in 1 piece for probably 15-17k, the turbo prices have been really dropping. Phil |

A friend and I looked at the car yesterday. It is less "ready-to-go" than I thought. It has a nice red paint but it is over the original brown.
The car wasn't reassembled after its visit to the bodyshop so it would be a bit more of a project than I want to get into though it might make a great rae car if stripped. The interior needs a lot of work (headliner, dash, etc). -Chris
