Bruce Anderson's tune-up class
Has anyone attended his class? There's one scheduled in the Bay Area next month and I'm thinking about signing up but am concerned that the material will be way over my head. It sounds like it may be geared towards would-be wrenches or current wrenches for Porsche dealers and independent shops. Just wondering if anyone out there has taken this course and can recommend it to a regular Joe like myself. Thanks.
|
Go! It will not be over your head if you are inclined to learn about working on your Porsche. It caters to both experienced and non-experienced Porsche DIY'ers. I went last year and it was great. I had already done most of the things they covered, but I still learned a lot. Jerry Woods & Bruce Anderson are very knowlegable and nice guys too. You will make up the cost of tuition and then some, the first time you perform your own tune-up. You won't regret going.
BTW, I have no affiliation with JWE or Bruce Anderson, just a satisfied student. |
I took the engine rebuild class - it was geared towards beginners and experts alike - you will learn a lot...

DO you have the contact info for the class, I might want to attend that. Thanks
|
I'm convinced! I'll sign up tomorrow. BTW Jeff, go to www.911handbook.com. Click on 2003 classes link and then on to "schedule and registration". Guess I'll meet you there.
|
Go. That's the first "upgrade" I got myself and my car right after I bought it six years ago. Learn a lot even for beginner like me and gave me enough confidence to do the tune up myself. Money very well spent indeed.
|
WOW...those prices look VERY reasonable too...the IT classes I take are WAY more...
|
Best money I ever spent on my 911. I took the tuneup class around 7 years ago.
I feared the car when I walked in. I was ready to tear it apart when I walked out. :) PS Bring your Performance Handbook, and BA will sign it for you. |

I enjoyed the rebuild class. The tuneup class seemed too spendy to me -- not because of their tuition charges, but because you have to pay Sillycon Valley motel rates -- that doubled the cost of therebuild class for me. The motel next to the Motel 6 is much nicer, and you can get equla rates there if you ask. But be careful about them takcing on an extra day if you aren't out at the crack of dawn.
to re-emphasize: it was very informative, interesting & fun. The Bosey twins are pretty fun guys and will answer hotrod modification type questions. The lunches are good - but these guys are not into sushi -- expect hearty, artergy clogging, tasty meals. Also, ask Jerry about his bicycle touring. |
Cole Scrogham used to offer a similar class here, even included an autograghed copy of Bruce's book. Got to watch him rebuild a 906 engine for a racer. Great stuff...
|
I think Colin liked the class a lot!!
|
Whoa, sorry about that, I tried editing my post twice, and it must have coincided with the server difficulties...
|
I'm in for this Saturday's tune-up class. Anyone else going?
|
I'll be there.
|
Hey Mike - I'll be there. We can talk pre-muff too!
|
I think I'll call up tomorrow and reserve a 'seat'.
What time does the class start/end? |
Moazam:
Its a 9-5 schedule with a lunch break at Jerry Woods, 491 McGlincey Lane in Campbell. |

Yep, I was there. I was on the left of the CS with the "825" on it (first of 28 Carrera CS's sold in the US). Lousy weather for pics! The blue one was just for sale on eBay but did not make reserve.
I'll bring my CS on Saturday too. |
After-action report
Just back from Jerry Woods' and Bruce Anderson's 911 tuneup class.
A great experience and highly recommended to all, especially those guys new to 911's. Not intimidating at all; Jerry is a great "lecturer" with concise, understandable explanations and there is no such thing as a stupid question; I can personally vouch for that, i.e. "So that is what that tool is for". Plus I met a few Pelicanheads face to face (Danskman & 96conv) and the 14 attendees compared notes on their cars and partook in some pretty good pizza! |
Yes Tom, I agree. The class was very good. I think the items that Jerry chose to review with us were very good choices, and done in a complete and thourough manner. The strength of the class was the wealth of knowledge of Jerry and Bruce. Not just techniques, but a lot of insight and background.
My only reservation on the class, and I strongly pointed this out to Bruce in the evaluation, was that the car that we worked on was not a good example to relate to. For those of you who weren't there, the work car was a '71 or '72 911 race car with a 2.7L engine with carbs. The overall impact of the class would have been much stronger for me if the car we used was something we could more relate to working on - like an SC or a Carrera. I would rather have seen the a/c compressor in the way, the heater hoses and blower in the way, fuel injection, etc. The engine compartment of the race car was sterile and had enough room to crawl around in - not really the application that all of us would go home to and work on. Even considering that fact, however, the class really was outstanding. There were a couple holdovers there from the week long engine rebuild class and they had nothing but great things to say about that class too. Kudos to Jerry and Bruce. And you know what? It looked as though they really enjoyed doing it. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif |
Yep - you are absolututly right!
I did mention to Bruce that it would have been nice to see a fuel injected car as opposed to one with carbs, but the a/c issue never occured to me (for obvious reasons). Do you run your Trackmagic at Sears? If so, we may see you up there this season. |
Hi,
I agree with Tom it was a great class, however, when I got home and checked out my engine compartment, and I had about 1/3 the room to work in there. I wish they had used a later model carrera as an example. I'm not sure how to remove the blower to get access to the valves. Other than that, it was a great experience, and I would do it again. Nice meeting you guys, Tom, Chris, and the guy with the blue 911 with a bad 3rd gear. Sorry I didn't catch your name. Hope to see you guys again, Chris |

Yes, that was me. :) Hopefully I'll get the syncro resolved within the next 4-6 months. The blue 911: http://devnull.unixville.com/~moazam...rscheOnWeb.jpg The class was great and I felt I learned alot. True, it would have been more realistic if the class car were a regular SC/Carrera. The cars in the parking lot were pretty amazing also, specially TomTurtles ClubSport, that thing was amazing. Is anyone going to post pictures from the class? I'd like to get a picture of the class car (full body, not just engine). |
