In Garage Now - Need Immediate Axle Help!
'74 911
got the new bolt in axles from pelican today...car on jacks, wheel off, entire old axle on driver's side is off...except for the very end against the wheel stub. bolts came out and wheel side fell apart (bearings fell out), but the end of the old axle i can't get off the wheel...is it just 'heat and age welded' on there? what do i need to do to get this piece off so i can bolt in the new axle!! Ryan

The gasket is holding it in place. You need to tap it gently with a hammer, rotate and tap different spots. Or try driving a wedge into the gasket to get it to split, a stiff putty knife is a good wedge.

Ryan,
Since you are replacing that joint ... get a large chisel and mallet! Locate the positions of the two Spiroloc pins -- where the 5th and 6th bolts would be ... and alternate hitting with the chisel on each side in an angling direction away from the flange ... to 'rock' the joint away from the axle flange.

Thanks to both of you...I'm a little getting back to the board because I also had shocks to install and a few little items. Turns out I reached that conclusion and promptly started whacking after I posted the thread, particulary where you mentioned, Warren. I found for an absolute fact, the proper order of installation should go outer first THEN tranny side. The first one done opposite took a couple of hours, the other side 30 minutes tops.
Warren, there's been controversy over the proper bolt torquing. I resused my hex pattern bolts instead of the supplied 12 star wrenching feature. I measured the bolts diameter to be 8 mm and thus torqued to 34 ft/lbs. Was this correct? Btw guys, The problem I've had all along with my turn signal indicators doing a 'double flash' thing ended tonight. I had tracked grounds and contacts around all four corners to no avail. New turn signal relay fixed it immediately! Ryan
