ignition wires made of gold

Very high quality ignition wire sets for V-8's can be bought for less than $75, why does a set for my 1985 911 cost $200 or more. I need to replace mine soon. What brand does everyone prefer. Has anyone tried making thier own?

The wires are cheap. It's the resistor ends that are about $15.00 each. Do the math. Yes I have made my own and reused the ends. They worked just fine. But if the ends are shot you MUST PAY.

Do a search on here for Magnecor spark plug wires. They are better and cheaper than the OEM wires.

If you can get them...Took me a month to get a set...When they are in stock, they do not last long.

Because we're stupid enough to pay it!

Honestly, I can't think of any other reason why they get away with charging such rediculously exorbitant prices which also proves that most Porsche owners have more dollars than sense.

I'm currently using a set of Autolite igintion cables (95 Dodge Intrepid 3.5L) on my 86 Carrera 3.2. The deep Autolite spark plug connectors are very high quality and stay well attatched as well as sealing the air around my valve covers better than the Beru's.

You can get a whole set at Kragan for $75 with wires long enough to reach #6 cyl. At the distributor end, you'll need to cut off the Intrpid(3.5L) connectors and slide the cables into your stock Beru ends so it will work on the distibutor cap which keeps it looking stock too.

Cheers,

The local/regional wrench demands the $225 wires with shielding.

Windward is emphatic that not only is the shielding not needed but theirs wires are so much better.

There are suppliers out there selling plug wires for $150 but are they good. I have been burned by low price suppliers before.

Who knows the truth behind all of this. Is the shielding needed? Is an OEM wire a must have (for $225)?

I have read all sorts of posts on this but no clear conclusion.

IMHO, all wire sets perform exactly alike when new. any performance gain is in your head, or the fact that the old wires were toast.

That's exactly what I did. What took the most time was crimping the dizzy terminals, but they supplied a tool for doing that correctly. I found that tapering the jacket on the plug side with a razor knife made the jacket go into the Beru easier for a very tight seal.
YMMV

So, the shielding doesn't make a difference?

I have seen, first hand, two Mercedes that had idling and drivabilty problems that went undiagnosed for close to a year. No one could figure the problem out. Turned out that an indy used cheap unshielded wires as opposed to the OEMS....problem solved.

While I realize that it 's a different car the computer/ interference relationship makes me wonder.

Besides, if your stock ends are fine how much can it cost to buy the OEM shielded wire?

The braided shield was put in place when Porsche was trying to figure out why the CIS cars kept backfiring and blowing up airboxes. Their thinking was that current was somehow arcing from the wires to the airbox and igniting stray fuel found in the air box. The idea is completely false. One of the times when Porsche completely missed in their thinking.

EMI interference can be an issue but any decent brand of plug wire should be fully EMI-suppressed and work just fine.

In general, Porsche parts are more expensive because for every part made for a Porsche, there are 1000 made for a domestic V8. Low quantity = higher cost, plain and simple...

BMW parts made by the same manufacturers are much less expensive.

Has anyone been able to source a quality spark plug boot? Bulk wire is certainly available and priced reasonably. Making spark plug wires is not difficult, I just can't find a suitable boot to replace the problematic Beru connectors.

spark plug boot priced reasonably?
Yikes! I just checked the price of one plug connector on the Beru website....$40.00?

Is that for real?

Sorry, I'm sticking to my $75.00 Intrepid wire set.

Joe
