Man, this is great! Drama this level is never seen on the Pelican forums. You guys are too mature (cough) to ever degenerate to name calling, and then this joker shows up!

Dude...the picture we're getting in our minds is a really nerdy little man who's really angrily pecking away at a keyboard because he's frustrated that no one will buy his $28,000 early car that he's modded.

We have a saying on the Internet: "LOL".

Passion, passion, that's what its all about.....

But the car is to someone's taste. If nobody else likes it, it has 0 value.........

If lots of people like it then it has huge value.
But if one person likes it then its only worth what that perosn is prepared to pay, regardless of whath the owner thinks...or how much money he or she has poured into it.

SO on one level there are no experts because its a unique car, only experience of where abouts it could sit with respect to other cars of similar quality etc etc....

On the ebay thing, if you want to sell you car so publicaly you have to be big and brave and take the potential knocks form potential buyers and their view of events.
If you want to buy so publicaly as well you have to be big and brave to take others' opinions and views, be they positve or negative.

In the end its a storm on the keyboards, no body gets hurt, a few people's pride gets knocked but in the end we're all here because we want to be here, to get others opinions etc.

I hope the car sells at a good price, cos from the sales patter its apretty good car, has great looks and shouldn't require any work.

Hope the buyer gets out and drives it or sits in the garage and polishes the inside of the exhaust pipe, or whatever he wants to do with it......

Keep the oil temp up......

You're showing a European Collectibles car as a "comp"? Has it sold? Have you seen the car? Have you seen any of their cars in person?

Asking prices are not comps. And in fact, finished auctions on eBay are not necessarily comps due to the number of flake bidders and shills.

The bottom line is that the seller is asking top dollar for a car that is worth it to a handful of buyers. To the rest, it is way overpriced and done up wrong. The car has been for sale in a public forum for some time now, and as such people making public comment isn't out of line. Nature of the beast.

But I'll reiterate...if you think that most of the people here are idiots, then why stick around? It's funny because there have been quite a few cars that have been criticized here, and sometimes the owner shows up and starts name calling. Tempest in a teapot. I remember one owner that posted pics, got somewhat hammered, was a little put off, but stuck around. Then when a member of his family got sick, people from this board pitched in with time and money to help out. People who had never met him in person.

97% (or 80%) idiots? Pretty decent bunch of idiots if you ask me.

The car liked nice to me... As far as the rest of the comments- hey its a free country. This whole thread got me to thinking about my values, and why I paid what I apid for my own p-car. First, "Investment" Ha! Never crossed my mind. The car is for fun. Second "price paid". I paid what seemed a reasonable price, maybe high, but from a friend who I trust and know how he keeps up his cars. I like the car because it has history for me. After getting rides in it for ages, out of the blue one day he asked me if I wanted to buy it. I jumped on it, andthe rest is history. Since I restore and race old vintage motorcycles (very affordable compared to p-cars!) I guess I have gotten used to measuring the "fun" factor from the getting it to run and upkeep expenses. The P-car has been a "10". Hope this car for sale turns the crank of the new owner, I like the look!

Lets get real here.....this is one VERY NICE 911!! Any selling price under 30k would simply be IMPOSSIBLE to replicate if someone tried to build a similar car. This car was obviously restored/redone with a big fat check book, professional work( NOT BACKYARD HOME WORK) and a hell of alot of planning and enthusiasm. If people want chrome window frames - buy them and reinstall after you own the car. Best of luck to all and NO offense directed at anyone from this post. Nice job gary though...I like it!

HAPPY DRIVING -

Jim

HAHAHA this thread just keeps on getting better and better. I just noticed that the seller added this to the description on ebay:

"For a couple of testimonials about car, go to pelicanparts.com and "911bbs". See Tom C's report of 10/05/03 and RRCrawford70s's report of 10/07/03. (For amusement, look at the rest of this stupid site. Attention Island911: now that is really "cheesy"!) "

calling PP a "stupid site" becuase someone dared to criticise your car?

Too bad some of the money spent on the Torres paint job wasn't invested in buying some class.

The good thing is prospective owners will get to read the whole thread. Good job man! The only downside is Island's ego will just get bigger with the newfound fame...

Geez, this got interesting quick. It is pretty simple - if you are asking a price and don't sell for a couple of years, the price is too high. I bet it would sell in 5 mins at $20k (subject to PPI), for instance. And $20k is still a lot of money for an early car that isn't either unrestored and perfect or restored to factory new. The Rgruppe style car market is still pretty small.

I really like it. I don't like the black trim - but that can be remedied.

I just had another thought looking at Island's tasty picture.

Gary has been labelled a "nerdy little man". Since he has the wider, more comfortable seat on the driver's side, he may actually be a "nerdy big man".

Not implying there is anything wrong with that, I just don't want to see Mark having the wrong mental image.

Also thinking about the "what it would cost to replicate" argument. This car will eventually sell to someone on that basis when the person who likes it EXACTLY AS IS comes along. Failing that, price has to drop to the "well, I'd pay $xxx for it" level.

(edit) and this bit The owner said the engine was re-sealed (what does this mean?) not rebuilt. is worth about minus $3,000 to me.

LOL . . . I was wondering about that too.

So Cam, surely you're not implying that this (below) won't get the $135K? . . .just think what it would cost to replicate today!

he still never answered why an enthusiast would consign a car at California Cars. Nor did 901/05 say whether he really believed that European Cars was an accurate barometer for comps.
