Why does this 911 keep showing upon ebay?

I rember a lot of scuttle on this car a while back. Any one know why it keeps poping up for sale? I recal seeing the white Carrera on ebay a while back as well. I still see it in the garage there... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10156&item=2435537 893

Pete000,

I'm going to take a look/test drive at it this afternoon. I'll post an update later. Can you tell me what the "talk" was all about on this car?

SCVWGUY 10-04-2003 01:22 PM

Tom, you have a PM

Tom C. 10-04-2003 01:33 PM

SCVWGUY, I sent a reply to your PM

SCVWGUY 10-04-2003 01:47 PM

Tom,

Thanks I sent you a message back.

masraum 10-04-2003 02:16 PM

Looks like it also has some www.caraudioinnovations.com speaker/sub boxes. looks good in the pics.

BTW, I didn't send anyone a PM, but I could have. :D

I just remember people saying it was in really nice condition, but some did not like the dark trim and wheel arches. I tend to agree if it had chrome it could be a real catch!...Let me know wht you find out. Thanks

Looks like a really nice car. For some reason, it just doesn't have the visual pop of a lot of early restored cars. It's very close to Jacks first car but just doesn't pull me in like BB1. Too bad he didn't leave the body original.

techweenie 10-04-2003 06:35 PM

I think the reason it keeps showing up is that the owner put a ton of money into the car and wants most of it back.

When I saw it, the price tag was $34K.

Can't speak for anyone else, but it seemed to me like one of the finest R-Gruppe type cars I've seen -- notwithstanding the blackout trim and SC flares.

SCVWGUY 10-05-2003 08:49 AM

How was the car?

Tom C. 10-05-2003 09:49 AM

Ok, here's my report . . . The body on this car is really "straight" and the paint is one of the best in black that I have seen. Lots of attention to detail everywhere on the car . . . doorjambs, wheelwells, under the hood and trunk lids, running boards/door sills are beautiful, all the glass is nice, rubber is nice, lights/lenses are clean, interior has RS updates . . . seats and door panels, the headliner is OK (no sunroof), the guages look good, radio dosen't work (did work a few months ago), the chrome (all chrome) has been anodized black . . . nice job. The brakes are new, transmission/clutch felt good, engine rev'd nicely (no pops/smoke/missing), the engine compartment is nice (no visable leaks). The owner said the engine was re-sealed (what does this mean?) not rebuilt. No idea how many original miles are on the car because the odometer was reset to "0" after the car was completed.

I drove the car and it felt strong, from idle to redline . . . no surprises. Oh, yeah RS fuel tank too.

So help me out here . . . what is the 70 911S worth? I was really close to working on a deal with the owner, but I knew I needed to get some help from people with more experience with these cars . . .

Thanks,

Tom

There are no useful guidelines.

This is a car you either 'gotta have' or not.

nostatic 10-05-2003 10:29 AM

what he said. It isn't really collectible due to the mods...so it is what it is...a very nice modified early car. Variations on this are usually around $20-25K plus or minus, but it really depends on the condition and quality of the work. $34K seems towards the high end of the spectrum, but if everything has been redone to a high standard, and you love the car...

If you would have sent me a PM, I would have sent you one back. Just so you know.

Tom,

The first 911 I looked at was a car like this. I regret everyday that I didn't buy it.

What do you want from this car?

What would it cost you to make a car this way?

Hope it helps it is sure a nice looking car!

Michael

I think you nailed it.

Just a thought, but it seems to me that most R-Gruppe cars are a creation of the R-Gruppe owner . . ..not "bought off the shelf". So it seems kinda cheesey that this guy is trying to sell it as a "turn-key" R-Gruppe type car. .. . kinda like; Yes, you can "get it" for a only $34k !. . . hurry, don't delay.

Huh, funny. . . I can hear someone saying " tabs, step away from the Buy-it-Now button, and drop the mouse".

techweenie 10-05-2003 11:29 AM

Michael makes a good point.

I was so inspired by this car that I decided to make my own -- with a couple of variations. Starting with a clean, black '72 T, I will have 9 months and about $18K into just the purchase, body & drivetrain (RS clone). I expect to spend another $4-5K on interior & amenities. Probably north of $3K on suspension, as well.

And I'm *not* aiming to reach the same level of perfection as this car -- just a nice streetable fun car.

YMMV

techweenie 10-05-2003 11:35 AM

Hey, Island!

I should mention that when i saw it for $34K, it was on consignment at a dealership. I suspect the car is available for something less than that from the owner.

Your point is well made. Somebody selling a Saville Row 'bespoke; suit on Ebay isn'[t going to find that many people who a.) want the style and b.) have the perfect biometrics for it.

This car is a custom-tailored suit that hopefully will find the one person in a million who would have made the exact same style/taste decisions...

(incidentally, for you purists, my 'imitation' of this car has bright trim)

Tom C. 10-05-2003 11:41 AM

Damn it . . . you guy are killing me.

I've gotta go back to painting the house so I can think about this so more.

Thanks for your comments . . . much appreciation

The thought that keeps ringing through my head right now is "What do I want to get out of this car?" . . . thanks for that perspective Michael.

Ok, so if I leave my face mask off while painting I should have killed enough brain cells to make this an easier decision . . . NOT!!!
