Stripping the paint ?
1980 911sc weissach. It needs paint in a bad way. Its had at least 3 paint jobs before, all the same platnium color, some closer
than others.I have auto painting experience from my distant past and a place to shoot it myself. I am tempted to strip it to the bare metal instead of sanding it down. I know its a messy unpleasant job but what do you think strip or sand? |

A few threads on this....pros and cons for each. Don't discount bead blasting.

The key here is how thick the paint is and what shape it's in. If there are cracks or crazing, then you need to get to the bottom of the problem. If there is rust under the paint, or if it is heavily pitted from stones, you need to get to the bottom. Good sound paint, properly sanded (blocked), primed and sealed, will make a good foundation for a respray.
If you strip, you can take the fenders, doors, bumpers and hoods off leaving only the rear quarters and the roof. Fenders and lids can be dipped. So can doors if you take EVERYTHING off and out of them. I'd hand strip those. And if you strip, there is no end to detailing the door jambs and weatherstrip channels, not to mention the glass gasket areas. I prefer to strip as little as possible. Having a professional media blast the detachables is also good as mentioned. To do that to the tub is to remove everything once again including the wiring. Do not sandblast a car. The sand will remove or pit the galvanizing if you have it. It also stresses the metal and makes it hard to work if needed. Some sandblasting is done with such a heavy hand that it warps the panel. I have had sandblasting done to trunks and undersides because it's fast and cheap. |

I also used aicraft stripper. My 79sc had two coates of paint. Works great you just have to be patient and let the stripper do its job. Tape the edges of the hood and areas so the stripper can't get down where you don't want it. I used old credit cards and the plastic hotel keys for scraping off the paint gook. Do a small section at a time I made it my winter project last winter. good luck.

piece of cake. use a paint scrapper thou. I stripped mine in two w/e using aircraft stripper. I poured some out of the can into mason jars, used those cheapo dollar paint brushes (two packages) and worked 2x2 area at a time. first coat of stripper dries quickly, put another coat one, soaks in, put a third one, it gets mushy, then scrap. put another on after third to soak into resdiual paint left over. after a bit of experience, you'll find you can go onto another 2x2 section when you put the third coat on the original 2x2 area. wear a respirator, buy a box of disposable gloves and be careful cuz that stuff stings if you get it on you. you should be able to strip the hood in a couple of hours. sandblast the ext. mirrors as i think they were electropainted? and sandblast the window channels. good luck and make sure you have a couple of cool ones on the side between resting periods.

yes, a plastic one where i need contour, as well as a 1 inch and a 4 inch metal scrapper on the flat parts. you're gonna to finish the body and the metal to metal doesn't nick the sheetmetal.

My car has two coats of paint. It was suggested that unless you are working w/ original paint/first coat to media blast back to bare metal. I'm going with that suggestion and taking it all the way down for new paint. I received a price around 450.00 for blast.

Rick,
"Media" can mean different things to different people. Here's a page that suggests plastic "media" is the way to go.... http://www.stripmasterspor15.com/blast.htm

rick, my car had two coats, a repainted s****y enamel coat and the orginal paint. The original paint came off pretty easily with aircraft stripper. oh the other thing I did was to put on a coat of was on the bare metal asap to prevent rusting. won't hurt the repaint process cuz it will be sanded off and etched by the body guy.

I had my car media blasted last year before it was painted. I was very happy with the results. Here's a pic.

I'm using aircraft stripper and am very happy with the results. The key is to let the stripper do the wok. If an area is stubborn, just reapply. I don't think top side galvanizing is an issue since you should be using a etching primer to reseal the metal anyway.
