swiching to msd, need a little help

Here it is:

I am going to switch to the MSD 6al box or the (6abtm,with boost control) it is going on my 2.7 Turbo. I just need some help on matching items that I will need:

I am also going from points to the Pertronix conversion, what shoule I get that will run the MSD and ignitor?

--What plug wires should I run
--What Coil should I use
--any problem with teh ignitor and the MSD, or Coil.

I want to buy all the parts but don't want to get into finding out that a certain type of coil won't run with the MSD or the ignitor needs difft type of coil... ...

Thanks

Oscar

The Pertronix shouldn't care what kind of ignition coil is attached. As for the MSD, they should have a list of compatible coils. Anything wrong with an MSD coil?

That is the ideal choice. You might also consider the Crane optical trigger in leau of the Pertronix. The Pertronix has a bad rap for reliability, but I can't vouch for the accuracy of that. The Crane unit is a bit of a pain to deal with as u=it is not as mil spec as i would like, but it works like a charm, and is cheap. Actually, I wish they sold a more expensive mil spec upgrade version!

Search the board - one or two posts on this subject...

The MSD likes 'spiral wound' rather than 'solid core' wires - Magnecors are generally the chosen brand. MSD Blaster Coils seem to work best with the ignition unit.

Some people have issue with the Pertronix units with DOA's and failures, whereas others believe these are issues are mainly attributable to incorrect wiring or bad grounding... The common ground seems to be if the is installed carefully and correctly it will run faultlessly.

The MSD and the Pertronix together are the favored route of many - especially earlier cars. Mr Weiner likes the MSD/Pertronix/Magnecor combo - good enough for him...

IMHO, both Crane and MSD perform their job well. In my case, I opted for the Crane ign. box and points conversion pieces. Two minor things swayed my decision:

1. The Crane box (Hi-6S) is physically smaller than the MSD-6 series boxes and thus fits in a more accessible engine compartment location.

2. The rev limiter is variable whereas the MSD uses "pills", inserts that provide only pre-selected rev limits.

Other than that, it was a toss up.

I'm with good ole Sherwood on this one....I had the MSD 6AL on the shelfe ready to go in my race car when the Bosch unit let the operating stuff, (smoke) out, so I wasn't in a position to argue!

It is HUGE! I fabbed a plate that attaches to the top of the shocks, but if I were to start fresh, I would give serious consideration to the Crane unit.

If you already have the MSD, do a search here. I seem to remember reading about a source for the plate I fabbed.

Don't waste your money or time on a MSD unit as a Bosch replacement.
Read the other post "MSD - Worthwhile" for some informative and REAL
facts.

Good Luck
