Eric, sorry no pic. But I'd figue that it would be like a supercharger (or easier). If there is no intercooler then you potentially can go sans tail.

Also, isn't rfng's basic system designed for a tailess car?

Page 3 of this thread has a few pics.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=9788&perpage=20&highlight=sc%20turbo&pagenumber=3

Edit : I was thinking you wanted to see the turbo body without the tail. I know the red one is indeed a '77 non-intercooled turbo. The silver one I think was n/a.

You need the tail for the intercooler (if you've got one), and to reduce lift (if you go fast).

Here is a picture that has been on the board before, unfortunately I don't know anything about the set-up.

That looks nice!

I've read that the Turbos could be ordered in the non-Turbo bodies, too. They're faster - less drag. I assume those have tails, to fit the intercooler. Were the early Turbos not intercooled?

Nice engine, unfortunately those intercoolers are nearly useless.

Sitting on top of the engine, they will act like heatsinks very quickly. In addition, there is no airflow through their cooling fins. That installation looks cool = very little effectiveness however.

Normal intercoolers enjoy the fresh air pulled by the fan through the decklid grill. Even then, they get pretty hot unless the car is moving.

Didn't some RUF model have the intercooler in the rear fender?

Emission,

I thought about that too. I think that high-speed computer-type fans under the I/Cs would help; but the airflow is still all wrong... the engine fan is going to draw more of the cool air thru the grille.

If anybody's found a ducktail in which I could hide a functional intercooler, please please please let me know.

Carrera Shed - the pre-78 turbos were not intercooled. If memory serves, the ducktail had a negligible effect on drag, but increased downforce dramatically (200+ pounds).

Looks like White Gold Metallic to me; available in '85 and '86.

What do you mean CO2 bottle? How does that work? Do you cool your intake or what? I know CO2 can get things nice and chilly but where? Thanks.

Ruf CTR had twin intercoolers, one in each rear fender well, well really placed in a cutout between the fender well and the engine compartment. I assume they got fresh air from the fender well, and some had the slats. Check out that ultimate Ruf thread. Also the 1988 Road and Track special series of worlds fastest cars has the Ruf and shows a nice clear picture of the installation. If someone has that issue and can scan the pic, that would be great! Its on page 15, and clearlty shows that a stock decklid could be used on the car. I suspect the car would be a little nervous at top speed though

About 15 years ago my dad built a black 3.3 Turbo with a Carrera flares - second best car he ever built. At first he wanted it to be a sleeper so he ran it with no tail ... that didn't last long. Here is a quick story with a lesson to be learned.

He was making the trip out to Las Vegas from LA, and somewhere in the middle of the desert he decided that he would open 'er up to let her breathe. He had the car going about 150 for a couple of minutes and decided that it was time to slow down. As he lifted off the throttle, the back of the car started to wag ... I don't mean get darty, I mean it started REALLY MOVING AROUND. He eventually got things calmed down and from there on out kept the speed around 100. But the very day that he got back to his shop he put a Carrera tail on the car - never had a problem with wag again.

Lesson, all turbo cars need a tail - whether it's a Duck, Carrera, or Whale. At turbo speeds, downforce is necessary.
