exc911ence - The Mooney PFM (with Porsche engine) was a disaster. It was heavier, slower, minimal useful load, and cost more than the Lycoming version. They only made a handfull, so parts have got to be almost unobtainable.

nostatic - Investing $15,000 into an engine for my $10,000 car would be a fun project, but when the time comes I like to sell my toys for something close to what I have in them.

I have driven most of the newer Porsche models from up 78 . If it has to be a Coupe i would clearly go 993 TURBO .

Todd, you beat me to that suggestion. While I'd always vote for a 993 purchase, there's also a lot to be said for an engine swap. Marcesq's 3.2 with SSI's in his '77 is one bad-a$s car. I think after he sold his 2.7, the whole shebang cost in the $3000 range. You can pull up next to a car like that at a red light, thinking it's an old car - and then watch it leave you in the dust. There's just nothing subtle about a 930 or even a 993. But put a 3.2 or 3.6 (a lot more expensive) in a '77 911 and you have a mighty wolf in sheep's clothing. Swap your tranny out for a Vertex rebuild for a mere $1200 and save up for your plane.

If power is what you want, I think a 993 will leave
you wanting. 930's are for the "big boys"!
The turbo lag issue is easy to overcome, and those
pesky street racing mini-van moms will be shaking
in their house shoes.
Vary few 930 owners leave them box stock.
930's have a way of turning a stock jocky into
a fire breathing "HP Junkie", so be carefull!!!
"Damn those Mini-vans" stay away um. until you
get a 930!!

Only photo shop as far as I know. A decent sign/print shop should be able to make up a sticker. Just one of million things I need to get around to doing, someday. It would be very fun to place on the passenger sunvisor....... I often get asked for rides. A perk of having cab.

Don - The 201 is $50K net after selling my car, or $60 K total.
Dantilla - I also owned a Bonanza for 10 years. I instructed a friend (private pilot rating) in an old Mooney. A 201 has Bonanza speed using less gas.
Speedster94 - A turbo 993 would be a LOT of money. It also has great depreciation potential, violating my rule that I eventually sell my toys for about what I have into them.
Richard - Good idea, has anyone bought the Vertex rebuilt 915, and are they any good?
Amac - I already am a HP junkie! I only need a few more... and then a few more...

I went through this about 3 years ago. I had my '72, but in its state of tune, it clearly wasn't capable of being a daily driver. Plus I wanted to convert it to a dedicated track car.

So, I settled on the 993 and was searching, test driving, and saving $$. But my instructor at a DE event had to corrupt me. He had a euro '79 930 with mods. TALLER 1st gear, shorter 3rd and 4th, RUF 3.4L P&Cs, cams, headers, etc. So he let me take it for a spin - SOLD. Plus the 930's were a lot cheaper than 993s back then. The 993 was fast and comfortable, but the 930 is a hairy-go-nutz-growling-spit-in-your-face car...assuming it has been tweeked.

So I bought one that wasn't stock, but didn't have the big mods on it. Mine had a boost controller and an upgraded intercooler. I've since added a full exhaust and a K27 turbo. I can't imagine having shorter gearing in 1st gear. Yea, I might get off the line a little bit quicker, but I already scream through 1st gear so quickly and it spins the wheels as I pass 3500 rpm. Shorter gearing would make both of those problems even more extreme (more wheelspin and less time in 1st gear).

993s have some upgrade options as well. I've seen the TPC supercharger kit on one...looked like it was really well done. Plus it adds about 100 hp, so I hear. Something to consider should you want the refinement of the 993, but find that it leaves you wanting more.

this one is a better quality. i keep meaning to put it on my sun visor also (in my eclipse turbo...not quite a 930 though...)

I feel the need to chime in here...

Some of the soccer mom's around me are driving Cayenne's..one even has a turbo. If so, get ready for an a$$-whipping.

Comparing 993's to 930's is an apples to oranges comparison. I've driven both and my 993 beats a 930 any on the points I look for:
Comfort (real A/C)
Usable speed
Low-end torque (hole shots)
Looks

Only you can answer what you are looking for.

Driving the different options is the only way you'll know you've gotten what you want. I'm a 930 guy; other Porsches are fun (and cheaper) but the ferocity of the 930 is what I'm after. Put your butt in as many different iterations of the cars that you're interested in and you won't have to make a conscious decision, it'll be made for you.

Only 41 PFM Mooneys were sold. I have not heard about a factory buy back program - although it makes sense.
