Which decklids will accomadate an intercooler
Maybe some of you have seen my post on the turbo 1969 project. Click here to see Project Turbo 69` In The Making. Suggestions Welcome
My problem is that I want the car to retain a low key look. With only carrera flares I would prefer something more conservative than the 930 factory tail. Could someone help me find an answer to this problem. Pictures would be great if you got em. BTW my intercooler is an aftermarket large unit so we cant judge by stock sizes. Engine is a 92` C2 3.3 . Kurt I think you're going to have to use a turbo tail. I don't believe any of the others would fit. Other than the larger aftermarket tails.
BTW, this is the first time I've seen the pics of your latest project... ...it looks great! Last edited by makaio; 10-12-2003 at 06:45 PM.. |

If you're looking at stock applications then the 930 deck lid is the only choice you have. An aftermarket intercooler only makes things worse. I'm using a GT2 wing with my B&B Intercooler for max air. OBVIOUSLY this won't work for that "sleeper" look.
There are several places to stuff an intercooler, none of which will fit a stock-placement unit. If you insist on keeping the stock possition there are no options I am aware of.

Isn't there a Ruf wing, that's a bit more subtle than a 930 wing?

I thought Ruf stuffed them in the fender wells on the Yellowbird. I believe that's how they ran the stock Carrera tail.

I really think the rear fender location is neat. Unobtrusive, lowers CG, and must work okay since RUF did it. Maybe there is a lot of piping involved.
If you don't want to do that, here is a "wacko" idea. Mount intercoolers on or under rear deck (where the speakers go). Use lexan rear window with NACA ducts leading to intercoolers, or maybe lexan rear quarter windows with NACA ducts. Electric fans under intercoolers for slower speeds. Advantages: any tail you like (or no tail), weight forward of rear wheels, no intercooler blocking access to motor, engine cooling fan continues to get cool air through decklid grille. Disadvantages: taking air from low-pressure zone (?), obtrusive ducts, channel for noise into cockpit, need to do some fabrication on rear deck, no rear wiper.
