Pop Up Headlight Motors
Just bought my slant nose this past summer and have the same motor/headlight issues. I'm posting some pics for posterity as the mechanics of the system is suspect at best. Any input on resolving the linkage would be welcome.

so what did you finally do???

Anyone ever figure out a quick / permanent / feasible fix for this issue?? Time to resurrect and ancient thread I'm afraid - - - SmileWavy thanks td Napa |
td,
I installed the Slantnose conversion on my car. The kit came Golden Coachworks in IL (no longer open). I was not happy with my lights jiggling every time I hit a bump in the road. I tried adjusting the "up" stops to preload the linkage, but that reduced the height of the light when raised. I determined the issue was the motor output shaft slop and a lack of headlight support when raised. I disassembled and modified the linkage on my Slantnose several years ago. Actually it was in 2005 after I found the pictures on CD. Anyway, the modifications included adding a bronze bushing/bracket to support the motor output shaft, adding a second linkage arm that supports the weight and preloads the linkage when the light assembly is raised, and changing the hinge pins from threaded bolts to 1/4" rod. This modification requires some fabrication and welding. I spent a lot of time getting the geometry of the added linkage arm correct for proper operation. This would likely very depending on whether the light assembly is round or rectangular. I have the round lights on my car, but I also have a set of the rectangular ones. I do not believe the rectangular one has to raise as far. I will post up pictures tomorrow of what I did. I wish had written down everything, but I did not. Hopefully I can recall everything I did. |
HI Dennis -
wow - a lot of work! pix would be super-great! I'm also a 914 owner, and they have a lovely mechanism that pops up the lights easy as anything, and they are solid and don't flop around!! I'll have to see what it would take to figure out a way to use those easy to find bits and pieces for this application. thanks td |

td,
Here are some pictures of what I did. I used replacement car door hinge bushings I found at a auto parts store to make the motor shaft bushing support piece. I used 1/4" ID lock collars, 1/4" ID nylon bushings, 1/4" steel rod, 1/4" steel bushing sleeves, 1/4" thumb screws and various pieces of scrap 1/8" steel flat bar to fabricate the parts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421279370.jpg Added bushing bracket to the motor support plate. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421279540.jpg Motor mounted with added output shaft support bushing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421279773.jpg Motor output shaft bushing bracket welded in place. |
Thanks Dennis - and the result was no bounce?
Judging by your repairs, your conclusion was that the motor shaft itself was not supported well enough? thanks for the pix td |
mine has metal Porsche fenders, motor and headlight lids, but the motor was mounted over the vin number in the trunk body. So I researched an found the original Porsche part layouts that the factory used. I designed custom arms and the main control shaft off of these. After a few mock-ups, redesign and tweeking I have a system that is extremely close to the orginal. I even found metric bearing cradles from McMaster Carr.
This wasn't cheap but is working very well. You still can get SOME of the orginal parts. I bought these used from another source in the Carolinas. The motor, brackets, return tension springs and some misc parts are the same as used on the 924 and 944. I will post pics if anyone wants them |

td,
Yes the motor shaft and the nylon bushing in the original linkage have slop that always the headlight assembly to jiggle. I have some more pictures explaining what I did to mine. The second linkage arm that I added supports the headlight assembly and also preloads the linkage so it is tight when raised. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421365321.jpg This shows the mods to the motor bracket. An extension was added to provide the lower pivot point for the second linkage arm. It also shows one of the hinge pins that replaced the 1/4" bolts that were used. These removed the slop at the headlight pivot point. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421365708.jpg This is the bracket welded to headlight carrier that has the "UP" ramp and second pivot pin for the second linkage arm. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421366176.jpg This the second linkage arm added. It can be adjusted in half turn increments to preload the linkage when fully raised. Continued: |
td,
Continued: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421366465.jpg This shows the second linkage assembled in the lower position. As you can see everything just fits. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421366565.jpg This shows the second linkage in the half way position. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421366697.jpg Finally, this shows the second linkage arm when the headlight is fully raised. Notice that nylon roller is tight against the ramp which preloads the motor linkage as well as the second linkage arm. The second linkage arm is adjusted so that it preloads the linkage but does not prevent the motor crank from fully rotating to the "UP" position. I am sure there is something I forgot, but this is basically what I did. |
Someone mentioned to me that the rectangular headlight buckets are Ford; any info as to yr. & model? The linkage on mine is completely heim jointed and is quite stable; they were made by Blackburn & Daly.

Awesome DAP930 / Dennis - I'll take two please!
i used a length of packing tape last night - worked pretty well to damp some of the jiggle! groan. td |
td,
Does your car have round or rectangular lights? Are your fenders fully boxed in to house the light when lowered? Does your motor linkage look like mine? If so, I may be able to do this mod to yours. |
Do the 944 headlight assemblies fit inside the 930/911 conversion slant nose bucket. I realize the setup is different where all the aftermarket conversions have a motor on each headlight but would it fit? Can you use your slant nose top piece/cover and attached to the assembly instead of the 944 cover? I realize you would have to use the 944 motor and linkage with mods but can it be done... Any photos of a 944 assembly inside a slant nose bucket for "fit" comparison?

Does anyone have an extra round headlight bucket set with motors ... or know where to get a set?

Just found this cool photographers website that showcases some photos of when he went to Golden Custom Coachworks. Make sure you read the captions for each photo. Now I know where my Slant Nose begin its life:

thanks for that link. that is what I have on my project. I may rebuild / refresh them but am looking for fixed headlight conversions. found this on a web site for mazda aftermarket stuff. but waiting to hear from them if I can modify my fenders to get them to fit.
I like the sinister look.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1551625471.jpg |
PS glad you resurrected this thread. I had not found it when searching for SN headlight options.
