How's the new server?

I'm having a few database problems on this end, very minor, but still disconcerting, considering the old one had about one error per month (this has given me 10 errors today). Out of 100,000+ database calls, that's not bad, but still much higher than it used to be...

Someone also mentioned that they couldn't upload a new avatar? Is this true?

Any other problems?

Thanks in advance,

Wayne

Seems to work fine, sometimes seems a bit slow when I jump around, but that could be my connection.

Hmm, I think it's your connection, cause it's really fast from my home DSL right now. There are 352 people on it right now (a fairly large amount), and it feels like it does when it's about 2AM and there are only about 75 people on it.

Seems REALLY fast - much faster than I predicted it would. Plus the server load is now averaging about 15-20% versus about 90% on the old server...

The search function can be a bit testy. A little slow, and today I kept getting messages telling me that I could only do one search every 10 seconds. Imagine my despair when I learned that I can't do a search every 5 seconds! But really, I don't think I tried to search more than once in 10 seconds. Other than that, she seems to be running quite smoothly to me.

The 10 second rule has been around for more than 2 years - nothing new there.

The search function is what I have been spending the most time on. It is the most intensive server task. Depending upon server load, and the complexity of your search, it may be faster or slower. In general, it's much faster than the old server. I'm still tweaking the configuration though...

this is not directly related to the new server, but i discovered an interesting behavior of the forum software today:
when you perform a search, the resultant pages have the search terms highlighted. ok, no problem there. the bug shows up if there are any images with the search term in their title. the "img" tag gets screwed up with font formatting.
btw, i found this out when i was searching for "mulholland"

Wayne, update on the problem I reported earlier, seems to have cleared up.

Possible explanation here: Post Server Bugs Here

Glad to see things are going well. The image post one is an interesting bug, I will have to report that one.

I realize that most everyone here doesn't realize how taxed the old server was, because I was milking it to eek out the optimum performance. Although we didn't "need" to upgrade, I just bought the same exact server to replace the main www.pelicanparts.com server, and I decided it was a good investment in the future. Since the forum is only growing, not shrinking, we would need to upgrade some day soon. Better to upgrade now when I have the time, and the older server is working well, than risk an outage. Plus, the old server is now setup and synchronized as a near-real-time backup should anything go wrong with this machine...
