Strange Light Behavior

Painters must have screwed up my '71 911 wiring (!@&%!!!) Most lights work (headlights, turn signals, backup, brake), except drivers side running lights (front and rear). Thought bulbs were bad, but when I put a replacement tail light bulb in, the side markers go out and the turn signals make the emergency brake indicator light (on dash) blink in unison. I tried the emergency flashers and all the running light work fine on that circuit. In the vicinity of the lights the wiring is so old (or covered with undercoat) that it does not appear to have any color-coding.

Anybody have a suggestion (correction: a productive suggestion)?

You can take the undercoating off pretty quickly by blasting it with clorinated brake cleaner. That should help to see what colors. Then I'd go to town with a electrical diagram and multimeter.

Clean the wires with lacquer thinner.

Red with black stripe goes to the positive terminals on the gauges, brown to the negative, black with blue stripe is gauge illumination, purple is the tach, green with red is oil, green is unused (sporto) etc.

This is all in the factory wiring diagram cheerfully provided by our host.

Jim,

I had the same problem when I reconnected wiring back up after my paint job. Running light and blinkers were all screwed up, it was only one switched wire on the drivers side blinker.
Those blinkers and running lights are a PITA to get enough slack to re-wire, also use some dielectric grease before you reconnect. There might be some electrical diagrams in the tech area of this site. Good luck

Rick
