Talking Pulled over!

Yup. It finally happened.

Took the 911 down to Frank's for it's annual exam and pap smear, and to fix a rocker shaft issue. Drove the VW bus down after work, drove the 911 home and left the bus there to retrieve later.

Enter ///Mink (another member of this board). I recruit Tom (without the 'h') to drive one of the cars home, and he elects to drive the 911.

Can you blame him?

It's fun watching my car from the outside - that baby can move when you want it to! And when I'm up high in the bus and it takes off from a light in front of me - the sound is undescribable.

And it's down to about 1/8th tank - of race gas. So it sounds good and smells good too.

So ///Mink is ripping along down Fair Oaks Blvd; he takes off and gets a lead, then slows down to let me catch up (remember, I'm in a 1960 VW panel bus) and then takes off again. It's a nice show.

Maybe now I understand why couples swing.

In the middle of one such cycle, I see a CHP pull out into traffic, in our direction. I motioned out the window for Tom to slow down, but he doesn't see it. He bolts around the car in front of him, runs it up to redline in 2nd, reaches for 3rd and... sees the cop.

Scheiße.

In a panic, Tom pulls the e-brake, thinking it would keep the nose from diving and maybe the cop wouldn't see him.

Yeah, right.

Instead, it locked up the rear end, making sure the cop heard him instead.

Yeah, that's a lot better.

Now, I'm watching helplessly from a few car-lengths back. The CHP pulls into the suicide lane and slows down to let him get ahead, then cuts over 2 lanes directly in front of me and hits the lights. I pull over as well; I figure I'm somehow obligated, if not outright responsible.

So the cop gets out and goes over to the driver's window and they chat. The 911's engine is still running, and continues to run for several seconds before he shuts it off. His brilliant plan now is to play blonde, telling the officer that it's not his car (true), and he doesn't know how to drive it (false) and doesn't know how to shut it off (false).

I get out - slowly - and - slowly - walk over. I tell the officer that it's my car and we're taking it home from the shop. Tom's babbling about how he doesn't know how to drive it; I chime in and explain to the officer that yes, it's very difficult to drive, but I had let him drive it in exchange for helping me go retrieve it from the shop. The race seats, roll bar and 5-point harnesses seem to lend credence to our story. The cop asks me a few questions about the car, like how long I've had it, specs, etc. and then tells me to drive it home before ///Mink wrecks it, and lets us go.

No ticket, but he followed me very carefully as I drove the rest of the way down F.O. I'm sure he was running numbers on his little computer the whole way. I gave him a as I turned off.

Not often do you get to watch someone drive your car. Rarer still to socially engineer your way out of a ticket. Watching someone else get pulled over in your car and then socially engineering them out of a ticket has to be the result of bizarre planetary alignment.

FWIW, I'm sure this would have included a 23109A - Exhibition of speed, which, IIRC, is a misdemeanor.

Go ahead, ask me how I know, and why I know that veh code section off the top of my head.

Even funnier when you're the dumbass who was driving.

You know, I hardly ever visit this board, but tonight I *knew* Thom would be writing this one up. What took you so long, Thom? It happened nearly 45 minutes ago!

The PP server was having issues - I wrote it, but couldn't post it...

This kinda smells like professional courtesy. or your way too familiar with traffic laws.

That Ol' Frank can do some magic can't he? I live off Folsom (Near Bradshaw) about 5 miles from his little ol hole in the wall shop. I really like and respect him as my "go to guy". Go about another block up from Frank's and you can visit Burrs for an ice cream while you are waiting. Hope you chose your time right and didn't get tied up in the Hwy 50 shuffle when leaving. Great "Honest to gawd officer" story with a happy ending.

Hey great story, Thom.

Now, you’re takin’ me back, way back... I was 27 when I got my first Porsche. At the time, it was an 11 year old ‘65 911 2.0 coupe. In its day, it was pretty souped-up and very quick. I got more tickets in that baby the first 6 months I owed it than I did in my whole driving career! Just about EVERY time I looked in the rear view mirror, I was seein' California black & whites with lights a flashin'. I came to one simple conclusion: Handing a Porsche owner a speeding ticket was like getting 'free' donation money for California. What sane judge in his right mind is going to believe a 'rich' guy who owns a Porsche and 'claims' he WASN'T speeding... Yeah, right... I've even been pulled over and actually had the cop mention he ‘liked my car’ and ‘just pulled me over get a closer look’ WHILE he was writing my ticket! Yikes, the dude had nerve... That's the kind that gives 'CHP enthusiasts' a bad name, eh?

At least you guys have a 'success' story! My hat's off to you and your accomplice. Good job!

Enjoy!

Good story with a happy ending.

Paul, that 65 coupe is gorgeous. Is it black, but photographed late in the day, or is it another color?

Thanks Jack, the 65 coupe pictured is the closest example I could find that looks like my first steed, which was a very deep dark brown, almost 'black' in color. Geezzz, I loved that car... widened chrome wheels, six single Solex carbs w/40mm venturis and just loved to 'run away and hide' from the other guys. ( exceptin' da man of course... heh heh) yepper, after all these years... I'm still missin' her.

I hadn't been pulled over in over ten years. First day I have the porsche I am pulled over twice. First on the way home fom the purchase. I had owned the car less than 10 minutes. The second time was about an hour later when i went to pick up my son at day care. Thankfully no ticket but the car seems to be a magnet.

Great story, it reminds me of one time late at night I was driving home and a Black & White pulls alongside of me. I give a polite nod and the officer in the passenger seat starts asking me about my car, turns out he also owned one, so he asks if it's fast....I'm not exacty sure how to answer this, so I try to dilly dally around the question (I don't want them trailing me), I just said yeah, she's got a little get up and go. It was a long light and he was really interested in it, he immediately recognized the lack of the characteristic "whir" of the early cars and asked what engine I had in it, I reluctantly told him about the 3.6 and he floors me by saying let's see what she'll do. I just laughed and said, nah, that's ok, I don't need a ticket tonight. And he said, don't worry it's late, there's no cars on the road let me see how quick it is, just be smart and don't go too fast...I was at a crossroads of what to do, but he was so genuine, then his buddy starts revving up the Crown Vic almost taunting me, so when the light turned green, I squeazed the long and slim toward the floor and quickly put distance between us. I got to redline and chirped the tires as I shifted up to 2nd, and again as I shifted into 3rd. After I reached 3rd, I quickly slowed, we got to another red light and the two of them were laughing with envy the way high school kids do after I light up their Rice rocket civic's, integra's wrx's, or whatever they may have chosen to throw a huge wing onto. The cop in the passenger seat gave me the thumbs up and said be safe out there. I made my right turn and drove off toward home smiling, not quite sure if that had really happened. To this day, I chuckle out loud when I think about it.
Scott aka Mouse

P.S. Thanks for bringing back the memories
