Dizzy question....
In my pursuit to understand how my car works, the ignition timing, and distributor are puzzling me.... Paul (pwd72s) recently sent me the best timing light Craftsman has to offer, and RoninLB sent instructions on what to do with it.
However, it seems the 71 and earlier distributors are different from 72 and later ones. Can anyone confirm this? My understanding is that the early ones do not have a vacuum hose (therefore only mechanical advance??) and are adjusted via a 10mm nut perpendicular to the 13mm nut that secures the entire dizzy assembly. Whereas the later ones only have one 13mm nut which secures & adjusts the distributor... Thanks in advance for any clarification. 71E distributor: ![]() 72S distributor: ![]() |

Evren,
Yes, you are correct that the 10 mm nut and bolt is loosened to adjust timing on distributors prior to 1972 models! That style clamp with 'pinch-bolt' dates back to air-cooled VW's and 356s.

The '72 and later distributors are also about 2" longer than the earlier ones, and the part that is inserted in the case is larger in diameter than on the early cars.
