Help Please: Horn Button Connection

I am removing the aftermarket steering wheel from my 73 911 Targa and putting back the stock steering wheel.

I have obtained a stock steering wheel and central trim/horn button but cannot figure out how the electrical contact works.

Can anyone please help?

Wire goes to horn button spade connector. The horn ring makes contact with the steering column when pushed to complete the circuit. If you don't believe it, touch the wire to the steering column. If it doesn't sound the horn, something is wrong elsewhere.

On another note I removed my horn to do some work and now plan to hook it back up. Is it possible to reverse the hookup on the two wires of the horn itself?

Thanks for the advice Zeke. I did check as you described. The live wire to earth sounds the horn so my electrical circuit is OK.

What I cannot figure out is how the current feeds from the contact ring (where the live wire is attached) to the steering wheel without being permanently grounded and therefore sounding the horn. I made the connection via a brass contact pin that came with the old wheel to the earth connection on the horn push trim ring but all that contact does is permanently and noisily complete the circuit.

To tkrefeld's question, I believe that the terminals on the horns themselves are isolated from the body of the horn so live can be connected to either terminal. The wiring for the horns is live from the relay and brown to earth.

Well, the horn ring is supposed to complete the circuit by grounding the hot wire which is isolated until you push the ring. No other wires are needed unless the ring is not working properly. The outside of the ring is grounded as soon as you install it. The whole steering shaft and column is earthed by it's own design. The center of the ring that is spring loaded is the part that meets ground when you push on the ring. Same as the button you had on the aftermarket.
