Help Fitting Front Strut Top Mount....KTL??

I have just ordered new strut top mounts like the ones below. Mine are literally falling to pieces with rust. Has anyone any tips on how to do this? Do I just unbolt the old ones and bolt up the new ones? Kevin (KTL) are you out there?

FWIW, I'm changing the front inserts at the same time following 101 projects.

I won't be using the monoball cartridges shown though.

You have it right. Once you remove the strut nut and drop the strut out, removing the 3 socket head bolts allow the mount to come off. BEWARE! Scribe some lines around the old mounts before removing and makes sure you line up the new mounts with the lines or your camber and caster will be off. Disregard this if you are planning on getting an alignment.

Thanks for the tip Kurt. I'm going to have to get it alligned as the rear end needs lowered too. I will do the outline thing though as I'm not sure how soon after fittment, the allignment will be. Thanks again mate.

If I remember right... Those things aren't cheap.

You could buy Monoballs for the old ones and it would be a nice upgrade for about the same cost (or cheaper) than replacing them.

Doh. Too late. Already ordered them for £49 + VAT each. ($82 + 17.5%)

Well, that's not as expensive as I thought.

If you still have the factory sealant (black stuff) around the plate bolts, make sure to get it all off before you install the new ones, It will make the alignment go much smoother.

Most of it chips right off. Just some kinda tar sealant.

By the way Chris, how is it that your mounts are that badly rusted? What does the rest of your car look like?

The rest of the car is fine.

I had the bodywork sorted (see website below).

External parts such as the rear torsion bar cover and these mounts must have been affected by rain, salt and snow over the years.

The wheel arches had been undercoated at some point possibly saving the inner & outer fenders.

I've replaced a number of the suspension parts (at seperate times as finances alow) and have just bought a set of 2nd hand spring-plates which I'll hopefully refurbish to look like this.

It's hard work doing all this when your car is your dailly driver.

Oh, and thanks for the tip Chuck. I'll use that along with your tip for removing old spring-plate bushes!
