Garage
If I had the room & money I would go for a lift. Right now I can barely squeeze both cars in the garage. The lift would make it a one car garage. The pit functions and little upkeep.
Scary pic. was it a stuck bolt and the use of a cheater bar that brought it done?

pits are dangerous as they collect fumes and can kill you.

I've had two homes with pit over the years.

What I dont like

Humidity/coldness (depending upon weather)
Dampness
Spiders
climbing in and out
resticted space especillay if your working with a friend
removing and replacing the wooden boards each time
leaving tools down there that i cant find when I need them quick

What i like

feel more secure
I can hide from the wife/kids
dont have to climb up (as in a lift situation) to get into the cab when working on the car eg "hey honey...can you just climb up this ladder for a moment and check this for me...."

Overall, I'd get a a lift, but a pit is handy if you can't get a lift.

Tim - your two car garage would become a two car garage again with a lift .

Well that a pretty stupid safety standard -- whether you "know" anyone who died in an accident of a certain type. But, hey, be my guest.

Well there are some fairly strong views on that......I mentioned,in passing, tomy wife that I will not put the pit in ( mumbled voice )
Me...."I will get a lift"
wife...OK
Me...."because I posted on the web and all these guys said I should lift"
wife...OK
Me.."I will have it for a long time and I can always take it when we move"
wife....OK

pause........

Me ...OK
