911 name question
Is the 911 that Porsche is putting out now actually called a 911? Or is it really called a 996 that everyone calls a 911 out of habit? Likewise with 993s 964s and 930s.
For instance, I know (i think) the engine type of the mid 90s 911's (slanted back headlights) is technically a 993, and while spotting one in a parking lot last night I was like "damn nice 993", and my friend was like whats a 993? Isnt that a 911? And im like hmm, well, actually, ummm...yes...and...well ...yes. confused -Matt ('86 911 Carrera Coupe....right?) |

I think the numbers you refer to; 964,993, 930,996 etc. are internal factory designations used to identify changes to the model so they can be easily defined and grouped.
I believe they are all 911's.

Yes, the official name remains 911. The internal designation number is what we car guys tend to use. My car has a "911" badge from a year 2000 model of what I would call a 996.
