If you want to sell it... let me know.
![]() The RUF 5-speed has a different casting from those used by the 930 4-speed. It has a shorter bell housing similar to the 935. It’s not easy to find qualified repair shops capable of rebuilding them though. BTW, what year 911? |

Its a 1988 Chassis. My dad started this project in 1988-1989 The engine and Trans came from Fla. Until I get it home in my Home workshop I dont really know what I have and what i need . Im going to finish it and use it as my weekend hot rod when im not at the track. Its a 3.3 L Single turbo its an upgraded turbo but what I dont know yet. The intercooler is defenitly not stock. All the bodywork is upgraded to 996, but the fab guy cut down the fr fenders and it has a cooler fitted to the front bumper that is ducted. I have the Ruf wheels too. I realize these ruf transaxles are valuable. Apparantly the Transaxle is fresh No miles. Car has been static since 1988. Cant wait to get it home In the next few weeeks. 1st chore Engine and gear box out and inspected. The car was driven a few years ago a mile or so

As far as i know, RUF tranny is nothing but early 930 tranny with short bellhousing and extra fifth gear fitted in front casing.

Ruf had their own castings made. Anyone who can repair a 930 transmission can repair a Ruf 5 speed.

I checked it now. RUF did indeed made their own castings, but they were based on 75-77 930 transmission with short bellhousing.
Here is the picture of extra fifth gear in front: ![]() I would like to have one of those: as sturdy as 930 but with extra gear... it should be little less smooth-shifting than G50 though, as it uses Porsche syncromesh (as 915) compared to Borg-Warner system in G50.

I bought a G50 for $1500. Much better

Blown: which G50 are you using, one from Carrera or from Turbo? LSD? Was it hard to fit into SC?
Reason i'm asking is that we might go that route later. Engine-clearance is not problem in our case so bellhousing doesn't need to be cut, but i'm really interested to hear how you make place for it in transmission tunnel? Did you have to cut out sheetmetal in front of it? Thanx! P.S. Actually, i don't see any reason for using RUF 5-speed under 600hp when smooth-shifting G50's are around for much less money. ![]()

The Ruf 5 speed was expensive at the time, between $15 - 18K and is fairly rare to see used ones for sale.
Ruf did indeed us their own castings for the case, and a eclectic set of gears, for example 1st gear is from a 924 turbo we have yet to identify the other gearsets. The hardest part in maintaining these transmissions is identifying part numbers. I had one well respected transmission guru turn down the job because he didn't want the hassle, customer service was not his strong point.

A Ruf front cover for one of those transaxles was included in a lot of 930 parts I purchased a while back. This cover alone had a $1000 price tag on it USED. I can only imagine what these trannies cost new.

Beepbeep, yes according to Bruce Anderson's book gears 2 through 5 are interchangeable, with 1st being pretty low and the rest close ratio to keep on boost.
If this is the case, what is the big deal with rebuilding them?
