Tranny Rebuild
I want to rebuild my tranny this winter and was wandering if there was any referance material out there so that I can rebuild it myself. I checked with Wayne and he does not have any plans to write a rebuild book for the tranny. Any help would surely be appreciated.

There are a whole lot of NLA tools necessary for the home mechanic so I've heard. The least of which is probably a press and jig for the gears. I don't know.

The best available references are the factory repair manuals, and the Bentley and Hanyes repair manuals. The required special tools and jigs can still be obtained or fabricated by the DIY or improvised. I highly recommend obtaining the use of a hydraulic shop press; for some of the 915 rebuilding tasks it is immensely useful.

When i rebuilt my 915, just did all the stuff that i could with normal tools. So i was able to take reverse and fifth along with input and output shaft (1-4 gears) out. After that i send out my diff case to be cleaned and inspected to fix some broken threads and my gears to be inspected and rebuilt (syncros and all that good stuff). I think in the end i totalled up to about 1.1k total including the replacement of the sliders as well as all the syncros. Plus i had ordered gaskets and seals. Took a lot of the labor charge out of it by doing the easier stuff.

The labor for rebuilding a tranny is the cheapest part, usually around $500 or so (8 hours of work). The replacable internals are the expensive part(s).

The only special tool I bought was the plastic shift jig for reassembly. I got through the job with normal tools, such as a vice, a large crescent wrench, a cheater pipe, an assortment of striking tools, and a bunch of odds and ends lying around the garage (wood, iron plates, farmer's jack). When it comes time for your project, we'll help you out.

Funny you should mention it. Just got mine back today from ol Frank in Sacto after 915 rebuild. Can't sing his praises enough. Got a bag fulla warped toothless broken stuff. Coulda done it myself if he would have stood by my side and let me use his specialty tools. As it was for some of it I did watch. Man the thing was trashed. Picked the worst possible night and worst possible place to go out on me (coasted into a parking lot of a bar that lost its liquor license called the Stagger Inn at about 9 PM on a Sunday night so no direct tow to shop) So I am now 2 tows into my Triple A allotment for this year. Oh well 5 1/2 years of ownership first major hiccup.

Bruce Anderson has an upcoming transmission rebuild class. I was planning on attending it, but unfortunately I won't be in the country during that time.

Transaxle Engineering Quoted me roughly 200$ a gear set not all will need to be replaced they also said plenty of HD aftermarket parts avable usially averages 1000$ for a rebuild, of a working tranny. Reasonable yes but it's the snow-ball efect well new clutch, pressure plate, T/O bearing, OK new cable , and rebild the peddle cluster It never ends AAAHHH

Why would you replace gear sets? If you've broken actual gears, I'd toss the tranny and buy a used one.
$1000 will not buy much of a rebuild. For a full rebuild, there are about $2500 in parts alone. James

I just finished a rebuild on my 915. I replaced all the synchros, 1st through 4th dog teeth and 2 sliders and all the shift bushings and gaskets for about $800. I'm sure most transmissions won't need all the dog teeth and sliders like mine. No special tools used except a hydraulic press, worn out clutch disk, a torch, a Bentley manual and some patience. Really not too difficult once you take a good look at it.
