maintaining a 964 type distributor

Does the 964 distributor require lubrication with oil 1x per year -- on a felt pad in the center of the shaft, so it goes slowly down the inside of the shaft like older ones did?

Or lubrication anywhere else?

How abuut the belts that drive the 2nd, slave, distributor? How often should they be replaced? And how important is it to install that little vent kit? An engine builder told me they rarely fail and don't need the vent kit. OTOH, PAG made the vent kit, so they must know something....

Nothing to maintain except you have to install the vent kit. The belt itself lasts about 60K. Even if vented they will fail around that time. Mine failed when I Bought the car at 75K (vent already installed).

Steve Weiner(sp?) rebuilds them for around $200.

I just replaced the belt in my distributor today and a small felt pad fell out. Does anyone have any idea where it goes since I didn't see where it came from?

How hard is it to replace the belt? I hear they do not recomend it for the home mechanic. Aslo heard the rebuilt ones are around 400 bucks and around 600 installed. Sound right?

Replacing the belt was a little diffucult. I found the instructions on website www.p-car.com/diy/dualbelt/ The only hard parts were getting the pin out of the gear and putting the c-clip back on the bottom of secondary shaft. The dust cap covering the secondary shaft took a while to get off without destroying it.

How do you know if they are about to go? Are they like a serpentine belt and show cracks?

Pull the bottom distributor cap and rotor off . Then try and look down at it. It's hard to see since its so small. It's easier to see if the rotor will spin by hand. If it does you need a belt.
