Pulled the trigger! '83 SC is all mine!

All,
You may or may not have remembered my post on the salvage title 911SC I was considering. After Tom T. went to look at the car, and I got the following numbers back from the PPI:
Compression / Leak down
1. 155 / 8%
2. 160 / 6%
3. 155 / 6%
4. 155 / 10%
5. 155 / 12%
6. 160 / 12%

I went ahead with the purchase. Not sure if anyone is famliar, but the PO had his SC serviced at Modderman Porsche near San Jose, and they seemed to think the car was quite solid as well. Actually Dave Modderman said that if he told the PO something was about to go bad, or thought a part was getting close to its max service life, the PO would always answer with ...."please fix it"

Anyway, here is a list of what has been done in the last 18 (or so) months:
new OEM dash pad and door sills
new OEM headliner
new OEM seat upholstery
new OEM horse-hair cushions
rear deck upholstery is new
new glass front and rear
all new weather striping around the entire car
new A/C compressor, condenser, drier, et al and hoses
had the outer rings on the Fuchs polished
new ignition box
update tensioners
pop-off valve (this was done more like 6 years ago)
new turn signal
fresh plugs (3 days ago)
new Michelin pilots
new clutch and associated hardware
new alternator
new ignition box (permatune(?) not familiar, but I think it was mentioned in Lelands thread)
fresh brakes all the way around
new bits and pieces in the interior (including the heater handles)
valve adjustment

A bunch of other stuff as well...but these are the major items. Basically, I totaled the receipts for the last 3 years and they total more than the $13,000 I paid for the car....

As for the salvage title...doesn't even bother me. The small engine compartment fire was documented on 10 pages of a journal with DETAILED pics, and the damage was VERY minor. Also, because the PO is a perfectionist, he had the estimate for repair total over $8000 for bodywor it really did not need and all new, factory replacement parts (his son works at a Prosche dealership). I think basically the insurance company just didn't want to take the risk that he would keep after them for follow-on repairs and agreed to total the car.

The car is beautiful, well cared for and came with two binders about 2" thick each with EVERY receipt he ever had on the car in chronological order. He even went so far as to have PNA send him a certificate of authenticity...I think he paid $50 for it...just goes to show the level of commitment the PO had to his car, as well as being a PCA member.

I'm THRILLED with it!

The PO has already delivered it! Great guy...his son thought he was CRAZY to sell that car after how much time, effort and $$$ he has in it. As I was thumbing through 101 projects, I noticed that a lot of them had already been done! :-)

Sounds like a good 911 SC and you sound thrilled.

A 95 Chev. PU I bought new was hit a while back and the insurace co. totaled it. I fixed the truck as it wasn't that bad and am glad I did.
It did have to be re-registered as salvage. And now that I've gone thru the process I relized that just because a vehicle has a salvage title doesn't mean it's junk.
As cars get older they will total them much quicker to avoid the potential problems and a claim that won't go away.
So I think there can be some good deals with a salvage titled car if you get a good history and depending on the damage.

Now about those OEM replacement horse-haired seat cushions?
Do they get the hair from race horses?

I havn't had mine apart but think they are just foam? Anybody?

A 93 Jaguar xj6 I bought in 97 with 35K miles carries a salvage title. I think it was stolen back and was beaten by the perps. The guy I bought it from said it had a dent in each quarter pabel which looked to be intentionally inflicted. I assume the insurance company totalled it and sold it at auction with the salvage title. It's has been a very good car for me. Actually, the title makes me less paranoid of that car than the p-car, which isn't a bad thing.

Dustin, congrats on the trigger pull. I'm sure when you can find time you will probable spend another $13k modifying your new toy over the next 5 years. It's easy to do, as many can testify on this board. Although you could enjoy the car as-is for the duration of your ownership, once you start to pimp it, you can't stop. Unless you want to spend untold thousands, stay away from the track .

BTW how many miles does your car have?

The PO of my car used to take it to Modderman also and I talked to Modderman when they inspected my car. Similiar situation, the PO would fix/replace things without any hesitation and I had receipts to prove it. Modderman is pretty well respected around here in CA/Bay Area.

I took the car for valve adjustment to RMG in Sunnyvale and Bobs reaction to the car was pretty much the same as Moddermans, no leaks, solid car, no need for rebuild anytime soon, etc.

Congrats on the SC purchase. When I bought my car I was very nervous for the first couple of weeks just expecting it to blow up or find out that I had grossly overpaid, etc. Turns out the car runs great and I got a good deal.

Congrats, as well!! What time did you take delivery? I wanted to be the newest owner on Pelican (me: 10am 11.16.03).

Regarding the above quote, I'm driving very gently and listing to every unusual noise (and bought a fire extinguisher today - hope to never use it!).

Took delivery 15 NOV...about 1130 am...:-) Also, the car has 188,000 miles, although knowing CA drivers, I'm not too concerned as it's probably a lot of highway miles. One thing that I am concerned about is the fact it still has the Dilivar studs. Can I assume that a broken head stud would affect the compression and leak down numbers? Other than that, how do people usually diagnose a broken headstud? If one or more does break, I assume that means a total tear down to replace them(?) It would be such a shame because the car just runs so well, I'd hate to spoil anything...

the broken head stud can happen any time, any place. But it seems that it is more prevalent if the car has spent lots of time in a damp environment...just anecdotal evidence though. If it is any consolation, 3.2 engines break head studs too.

Sounds like a very well sorted car. Time to drive!
