Not to open a can of worms, but.........
Advantages/Disadvantages of SCs vs. Carreras? Having seen the rabid loyalties it seems that many members of this board show toward one style or the other, I'm fairly sure that there must have been some thread on this in the past. I searched and was not able to find one. Anybody point me in the right direction? Otherwise... -What are the main differences between the SC 3.0 and the Carrera 3.2? -CIS vs. Motronic? Who is king? -Both have the 915 transmission... Right? Thanks a million... ![]()

Everyone knows that SC's are much better cars than Carreras. It's been reported that dear old Ferry was very disappointed in the performance of the later cars. It's a no-brainard.
Can of worms......open. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Mark Wilson; 11-15-2003 at 07:34 AM.. |

The 3.2 is my choice, the extra 200cc's plus the fact that the motronic can be tweaked gives it the advantage, at least in power. I've got 245hp with just exhaust (pre-muff, sport muff) plus a Steve W chip....it moves the 2600lbs along nicely.
That said, I'd take a excellent condition SC over a not so excellent 84-86. My 80sc was a great car and served well as a daily driver and also allowed me to have plenty of fun at Laguna, T Hill, Butonwillow etc. If your budget allows....go for a 87-89 3.2.....I do not think you'd be sorry. Craig |

Driving a Carrera: your car will burst into flames shortly into the trip home. Debris from the explosion will be thrown into a local orphanage, killing innocent children, and shockwaves from the blast will kill a bunch of dogs and cats at a nearby rescue shelter. And when the tires fly off, a group of baby harp seals will be run over.
Don't drive a Carrera...it makes baby jezus cry. An SC on the other hand...taller, richer, better looking....just by climbing into the car. And world peace gets just a little closer every time you turn the key. Yes my friend, there is a difference. |

Also, in regard to your trans question, the 78-86's had the 915, the 87-89's went to the G50.
Having had both, I do prefer the G50 for daily driving. I'm sure you'll hear arguments for both though. Craig |

THe factory saw it as an improvement when they move from SC to Carrera. Who am I to argue with German Engineering?

Carrera is a better car...especially G50 one...it's faster, better shifting (w/ G50), easier to tune...

Depends what model you go for IMO. Euro Carreras have 231Hp which could make a difference. A lot of the comparisons seem to come from Euro spec SCs (204Hp) against the underpowered US Carreras.
If you compare a 188Hp SC to a Euro Carrera there is bound to be a difference in performance whether the Carrera is heavier or not.

Well let's see...I have owned 3 SC's and one Carrera. In my opinion I have 'Enjoyed' the Carrera more, simply because I always seemed to have either a 915 (blalky shifting) issue or a CIS issue (hunting, hard start). Yes, I had valve guide wear on the 3.2, but I rebuilt it and now the car is perfect. It's also for sale as of today!
I say get the latest one you can afford, treat it right, flash at your fellow Porsche drivers, and have fun.

Having had both, they are great cars and it's hard to go wrong with a good example of either. I will say that my 84 with 221K (motor/tranny never opened) with Steve W chip is probably the best car (of 30+) I have ever owned, but taking away nothing from my first drivable car, Beasley, a '63 VW crew cab pick-up. I miss him to this day.
Based on my experience alone, I'd also say that Carreras are more reliable.

I had a beautiful '87 coupe with 57K miles on it. I sold it for...umm...personal reasons, and the new owner ended up having to do a top end (valve guides) at about 65K miles.
I bought my '79 coupe with 41K miles, have put over 18K miles on it, and it runs like a champ. As for driving comparisons, not much difference in power. My SC feels tighter and more tossable, but it is very well sorted with new shocks, brakes, etc. As for the mythical tranny debate, my 915 shifts every bit as good as my G50 did...the only difference is that the 1st to 2nd shift in the 915 requires either a bit more finesse or a bit more of a tug (ie, if you lack finesse you have to tug). But it also feels a bit more precise than my G50 did...I can feel exactly when I'm in gear. BUT, I have a very nice 915, and most of the trannies out there are fairly tired. A tired G50 will feel WAY better than a tired 915. And I think that is where the big difference lies. Buy the best example of either one...these are all old cars and condition matters more than miles and years. But an SC will help move you to a higher plane of living...and world domination will be yours. |

Having seen both cars in stock form, on the dyno and the track I'd say either is at least 15 years old now and just short of POS catagory if they were daily drivers and not well maintained.
Either car can be outstanding. Either can be a POS. The G50 is highly overrated compared to a well maintained 915. Clutch is a little sporting though on the 915. No wait the SC is a more sporting drive compared to a Carrera...... Let's face it the Carrera was the beginning of the long down hill slide into luxury 2 seaters by Porsche at the expense of a good sports car. The Carrera gained a few HP and some weight to more than negate the improvements. 50kg and 25 hp. Porsche put two feet in the mud with the Carrera and took their own sweet time cleaning up the mess. |

Now in 993 land ...

Get the best car your money can buy. They both are very good cars. Let's say you have 15k: Generally the SC you get for that money will be better than the carrera for the same price. If you have unlimited funds, get a late carerra with the G50.
