fire extinguisher in your P-car - any pix?

Many of you recommend carrying a fire extinguisher in a P-car. Does this advice apply to my weekend driver and occasional autocrosser (next year)? If so where and how should I attach a bottle extinguisher? Share a pix of yours?

mine sits in the rear driver's side footwell along with a rolled up bed sheet so it has a snug fit (never know when you'll need a bed sheet). I can reach it while sitting up front, and it can't roll around.

for an early car

this is a great location. One that utilizes the existing luggage strap anchor mount holes for attachment.

Later changes to the drivers seat operation would make it more diffucult to access quickly for later cars. Just having one in the trunk is better than the alternative.

Good post. Shawn.

Mine is under the drivers seat:

The car is a '73 but the seats are from a '77. I put an aluminum "el" between the the two front bolts that hold the slider to the seat adapter plate and attached the bottle.

Hi,

Mine is mounted on the side of the "console". Could be stating the obvious but make sure you use a steel bracket designed for use in race cars and not a plastic one for mounting extinguishers on kitchen walls.

Am away from the 911 at the minute (so no pics), but mine is on the little narrow shelf just under the drivers' side rear quarter window. I figured if the fire was inside the car, can still be reached from outside the car. It can be seen from outside just below the bottom of the wndow.

BTW, it is HALON. My only worry is that I may have to use this $45 extinguisher on someone else's car.

I would hate to put out a fire in my aluminum car with a corrosive chemical that destroyed what was left of MY car.

If YOUR car catches fire alongside mine, you might see me thinking about grabbing mine for just a sec.

But the SCWDP sticker on YOUR car would remind me that I really do need to put that fire out.

Where does one buy a Halon Ext for $45?

Mine (not Halon) is on the tunnel ahead of the shifter.

That wouldn't pass tech in my region. The fire extinguisher must be bolted down (bolt+nut). The trans cover plate is only held on by sheet metal screws.
I bolted mine behind the passenger seat on the vertical wall. I can reach it from the drivers seat that way.

I carry a halon in the car behind the pass seat wrapped in a sheet as well and another chemical extinguisher in the boot if the first fails. Haven't seen a great way of securing the first to the inside of the car.

I got mine at SanVal at Van Nuys Airport. I think the price for the 'new' HALON is now up to $67. for the little ones. I bought several (like 6 of them) for the 3 cars and each of the cabins on the boat. They had a couple of 'old' HALON ones for $45.

Had disclaimers on them about not allowed in California, and that they would be illegal to refill. Funny, huh? Illegals in California.

Here is mine. Halon unit mounted in front of passenger seat. Its a great use of otherwise wasted space and very easy to get to.

Got it from Stable Energies.

Here is link to their site.

Prials;

That is a great site, solves the mounting bracket prob, AND explains the chemical problem.

Thanks!

Thanks Singpilot. After reading about the ABC chemical units there was no way I was going to let one near my Porsche.

So, you think HALON is the cat's Meow

Another take on Halon vs Dry

Yep, still do.

If the halon does put the fire out, great. No muss - no fuss.

If it does not put the fire out, I can at least tell the insurance company with a straight face that I tried. That would be just before they write me a check to go out and get a new 911.

I have heard from several fire fighting "experts" that if the first unit does not put out the fire, most often the use of multiple ones will not improve the final outcome. From this I figure I will use my unit and then cut and run.
