engine stand
I need an engine stand to make a quick job on my new 3.0L engine easier. The engine is not in the car yet. I'm not going to rebuild it or anything, I'll just need to have it on the stand for a day or 2 to install carbs and SSI's, and re-furbish the sheet metal.
I can borrow a friend's engine stand that he uses for his 912. It has 2 arms instead of 5, but is pretty beefy; the 2 arms are about 1-inch thick. He bought it at a swap meet for $75, so it's not one of the cheapies you see for VWs. Will this work? I hate to spend $300+ on a stand for a 1-day job. Charlie '70 911E (soon to have a 3.0) |

I believe if you are not going to split the engine you don't need the two arm adapter a regular stand will work.

I would see if you could borrow a proper engine stand. If you put your location in your profile you might find someone near you has an engine stand.

I live in Minneapolis where do you live? Are you close enough to pick it up? If you're willing to pay shipping I'll send you mine. I have my engine parts at the machine shop but won't get to them until after the holidays, so won't need it for awhile.
Send me a PM.

Thanks guys,
I live in Montara, CA, on the coast about 20 miles south of San Francisco. Just a little warmer here than MN. Charlie |

Keep in mind if you use a regular engine stand with out the adapter you won't be able to rotate the engine more than about 60 degrees before the SSI's interfere with the engine stand.

If you don't get one SSI's are not that hard to install with the engine in the car. You can easily get to everything from below. When you remove the engine put it on a workbench or a box. I have a large wooden box with casters on it. I used this for my rebuild as well. It was a little more work than with a engine stand but not really that hard. A lot of people are using the motorcycle/ATV jack for removal and installation of the engine. When it's raised up to it's full height (About 16") it's the perfect height to work on your carbs and the tin. It's still very stable at that height as well. It's no engine stand but it works. If your short on cash you'll find a way! I don't need the luxury of an engine stand when I do this once in a while. Oh yea, the box is universal too. I had the small block chevy from my boat on it to do a once over a few years ago.
Hopefully you can find a stand to barrow, but if you can't you can barrow the box!
