Help ! Clutch/shifting problem..????
I have a 1986 911 Carrara Cab. and today at a traffic light It would not go into first gear. It grinded. After trying twice I realized It isnt engaging even after pressing the clutch in & out. After turning off the engine, shifing into first and re-starting the car, it drove ok for a few lights and repeated the problem in first gear while stopped. It happend once yesterday and never happened again the rest of the day. Now today its worse but is intermitant. The Mechanic of course said I need a new clutch. My clutch is new with about 10k miles on it. I think the 86 still had the cable clutch. What do you think it is. Im afraid of being takin for a new clutch when maybe its a cable or adjustment. Help !! What do you guys think?? Thanks again for everyones help

Did this suddenly happen? If so, I would suspect that the pin in the pedal rack that holds the clutch pedal is shearing. John Walker knows a bit about this.
If happening gradually then I'd get under the car and reset the clutch cable to its 1.0 spec. John

Sounds like the clutch is not disengaging when you press the pedal. The cable and the little pin seem to fail catastrophically. My GUESS would be that you are having a problem with the clutch hanging up on the guide tube or something like that.

Ron I had a similar situation, just not as extreme with my car. It ended up being the cable out of adjustment.

Hang on a little longer Ron. Something is bound to go, THEN you can fix it!!

Ron,
I'm having the exact problem you describe. Can't get my 85 into my mechanic b/4 Monday. My problem may be clutch cable related or a bad syncro in low. Keep the web posted as to results and 'll do the same. Harris

I had the same kind of problem and now I have my engine on the ground waiting on parts to change out my clutch. I also have an 86 but it a turbo. What I found to be the culprit was a rubber centered clutch. As a number of folks said from this board, "they usually give away at about 20K miles", so true. Good luck

First check the adjustment and the action of the clutch arm if that checks out. Then look at the clutch it self. I had a similar situation with a new clutch. It wasn't the cable or any adjustment. Does the 86 have the g50 or the 915? What make of clutch do you have? The symptoms I had were sometimes the clutch would drag and I couldn’t shift into first or reverse when stopped. Then it would mysteriously disappear then act up again. It turned out to be the clutch disk spring assembly was falling apart.

We'll here's more of the story......When driving car home from work all of sudden it would not shift into any gear while car was in motion. I drove home in 2nd gear, about 10 min away. I brought it to my Porsche Machanic whom I trust very well and is a good neighbor of mine. The Pilot Bearing siezed, completly destroying the clutch, and ruining the Main Shaft in the Tranmission. The Flywheel may be able to be fixed. The mechanic cant believe the clutch wasnt slipping or making alot of noice but I didnt hear any bad noice in the back 'til I was almost to the mechanics. I also wanted a TuneUp which I had scheduled next week. The estimate right now in his words "TO FIX IT RIGHT" is $3600. My mechanic wants me to come in tomorrow and look at everything and decide what to do. He says it "may" be possible to possibly fix the main staft or something, Illfind out more tomorrow, but he cant warranty or guarantee anything. He said I have the option of rebuilding Mine or getting a rebuit Tranny. GHe said there may be some things we can do to "Avoid taking a second mortgage out on the house" as he put it. So Im going to look tomorrow. I am devistated, shocked, but must go on get this guy fixed. My 86 Cab is emmaculant! The bright red paint still looks brand new and the car is absolutly perfect. It has 138,000 miles. It ran flawlessly with tuns of torque and power. Very Strong Mortor and , we'll obviously you guys know, How f'en rad it is to drive and own a 911!! So its defenatly worth getting fixed and needs to get fixed.....at any price. Any advise !!??? Anything I should look out for when I go look at this Main Shaft and decide to rebuid, buy a re-built......
thanks everyone for all your responce....this time it was a little over my head and skill level! |

A rebuilt tranny from vertex runs about $1300 if I recall correctly. They will take your old one as a core. There is absolutely no way you should pay $3600 to have this fixed. I would use this opportunity to get a fully refreshed tranny. I paid $1600 for a clutch replacement, and it only fixed half of my shifting problems...whish I had gone the vertex route. Learn from me...
