Perspex windows
I was reading one of the English car magazines the other day, and came across an article concerning Perspex windows.
The writer suggested these windows are much safer than stock, not to mention lighter weight. Although I am dubious to the "safer than stock" quality of the windows, the lightweight value interests me. Has anyone used these windows in their Porsches? Do they scratch and nick like Lexan? I looked Perspex up on the internet, and it seems they're made for only English Fords and/or English cars - like Minis, etc. Can one "cut" them to size? I'd like to know what other people think about this. Thanks.

Isn't Perspex just a different name for Plexi-glass?

lexan windows with mr10 coating is probably the best of the bunch when it comes to saving weight and scratch resistance. However, like a carbon fiber dash (discussed elsewhere on this board) this is not a recommended mod for street use. They still get scratched and the resulting "thousand points of light" when driving at night can be confusing (read dangerous). Also the plastic may break into sharp edged shards upon impact- so there is no aspect of it being "safety glass" then, is there? The factory did make thinner glass for its production cars, but that is no longer available.
For the above reasons, those that do take the risk on running lexan on the street, usually replace just the back 3 windows. Their rationale is a) "what's behind me is not important" (remember where that came from) b) the weight is removed from up high and the back c) less vision problems associated with the back 3 windows if they are scratched d) they don't need no stinking rear window defroster (obviously left coasters from the south) ![]() |

What we need is some kind of galss coated plastic -- light, scratch resistant and shatter proof.

Too bad there's not a glass mfgr that makes / sells thinner (lighter) glass for racing applications. Or is there?

Is there a way to make Vanna lightweight?
BTW: anyone see the mugshot of Glenn Campbell? Yikes! But I digress: so there is no lightweight glass available anywhere? I'm tired of being the one between my Porsche and I that is on a diet... ![]()

Sounds like Engineering Officer Scotty's 'Transparent Aluminum' would be the hot setup!

'Transparent Aluminum'
That does exist, you know.
AL2O3 Rhomboedral hexagonal single crystal. . . . .. crystalline aluminum oxide (synthetic sapphire) .. . often used for watch crystals.
