Where is my gas going

I broke down on Saturday and assumed it was something more than running out of gas. Fortunately, I only ruined a rear bumper light ($14) and my license plate is a bit mangled. I pushed home a couple miles with my other car. The license plate on my Honda caught the light on my 911. Anyways, I know my gas gage is off a bit, but just a week before I out roughly $20 of gas in it and hardly did any driving. There is no puddles under the car, it does not run rich (never backfires) so I where else could my gas be going? It is a 77 ROW 911.

What's your observed MPG?

What's your oil level like? Does it smell like gas?

Was it left outside. Maybe someone siphoned gas out.

I always reset my trip odo when I refill. And I write the old number on the gas receipt. That way, I could keep track of my mileage if I was not too lazy to enter the data into a spreadsheet.

Also, it is well known that the gas gauges in these things are unreliable. Very unreliable. But the light never fails. When the light comes on, get gas sometime during the next sixty miles or so.

It has a direct correlation to the right foot

, that pushes the fun pedal on the right

, which makes some of the gauges go up

, and one of the gauges go down

.I have noticed the middle pedal makes the car go slower

, try not to use that one.

LOL! Funny!

Maybe the pump wasn't so... uhm... honest? I've seen reports (you know the ones "up next, something you can't live without hearing, or you may be ripped off/dead within hours, etc). They've found gas stations whose pumps weren't accurate. In other words, they were cheating. Just a thought.

I was gonna ask whether there were any new drivers in the house. Not driving the P-car, but rather putting the P-car gas in their beater.

Thanks for all your replies. I like the receipt idea. No young drivers in my house. Gas light was on. Car is on blocks for winter as of Sunday. It was running nice so i figured I would put away and have a peacful winter not worrying about anything broken. I will check the oil though.

The old trick with gas pumps is to have them accurate at each $5 interval.
In other words...the pump cheats you from$0 to $4 then makes up the difference in the last dollar.
This means if you pump$22 you will be shorted.
This way the inspectors would not catch them so easily...because they use a measuring can that holds 5 gallons...but the price would not jive if they calculated it out.
