Question
Sorry, I did not see anything from the experts on the correct seal depth when installed for the updated seal:
Does the flywheel seal go in until it is just flush with the case? I got the brown/black one with ribs on the outside, which I am told is the best updated part, and it went in fine with some effort until it is just flush with the case. I am trying to be very careful not to deform it and just want to make sure it should not go any deeper before reassembly. Thanks, Olivier |
There is room for it to go in further but flush w/ the case is good to go!

Thanks, that makes me feel better. It seems that I have a question along these lines with every part I replace. I am enjoying all the access to these parts of the engine, but also worried I will make things worse by disturbing seals on what was at most a seepage issue that was still within oil "consumption" specs.
Thanks again, Olivier |
I understand all those emotions, Olivier. All that worrying just makes for a satisfying feeling when it's back together and works just great.

Thanks, Superman. As much as I look forward to getting it back on the road as soon as possible, I am taking my time and enjoying all the exploration and ability to fix and clean things I cannot normally reach.

Don't worry about pushing that crank seal in a little further. Doing so actually give the seal lip a "fresher" surface on which to ride. Over time, the seal can actually wear an ever-so-tiny/shallow groove in the crank flange.
