Thanks Denis, from all the guys I've talked to, and I've talked to a lot including Tyson, they agree that the assembly lube was the likely culprit. I think that assembly lube gets even slicker when it mixes w/ oil.
The seal was just sitting there. I pushed on it and it just started to slip right back in, slippery little sucker. I probably could have pushed all the way in w/ just my fingers. I’ll be using a little CurilT on the new one for insurance. |

Venue for the event will be beautiful Penticton, BC. Those of you who have been there, will know what a great location this is. I'm working on the details already. Originally, it was announced for the last weekend in July, however, the ALMS decided to return to Portland International Raceway in '04, on that weekend. Because many of us here in the region, will want to attend the race, I will be moving the Round-Up to early August; probably the 2nd weekend in August. Stay tuned! |

Myself and everyone I have talked to had quite a ball getting the thing even started. I was in fact wondering if I had ended up with the wrong seal (too big). It should be a really tight fit that makes you nervous you bang the seal up when trying to put it in. Ingo |
Doug, I’ll watch out for the updates, thanks!
I had the seal on the door step when I got home today and I’ve already installed it. It was a lot different then the other one. The old one didn’t have the ribs on the outside and they didn’t get worn off, that’s how it was when I got it. I put the new one in and couldn’t get in the last mm. I thought that since I got the 12mm one it was as far as it would go and I was screwed. I carefully pulled it out and took a couple measurements, there is plenty of room in there. So I tried again, this time w/ a little more motivation it went in all the way and is flush w/ the case. I don’t know why they were so different, although the old one was the “correct” 11mm seal. All I care about at this point is that it was an easy fix considering. Now I just need to get it cleaned up and back in but that won’t be until maybe Sunday. Thanks for all the advice! |
Ryan...the seal I used on the recent overhaul was from a genuine Porsche gasket kit. It had the 'ribs' on the outside perimeter that you mention.
The 'Bomber liked the ribs.... ;) |
Engine went in last night, will finish everything else tonight (stuck at work right now).
Wish me luck! |
Ingo just came by and got my jack....he's pulling his this morning.
BTW...good luck, crossing fingers....at least as well as can be while taping and mudding sheetrock. |
I look forward to seeing the new P-car pad Mike.
The old seal was pushed right out of the case. It was still in there but the flywheel was the only thing actually holding it in. I’m sure that the oil was mostly coming out of the tab in the case (at the top) because that was the only part that the seal wasn’t sealing at least a little. The seal looked like brand new. The new seal was very different then the old seal. I bought the 12mm seal, which is actually the seal for the earlier 911 and the later 993 engines, why I don’t know. It fit much tighter, even though the sealing areas are supposed to be the exact same dimensions. It was black w/ a little brown in it, the old seal was all black. I used a little CurilT on the outer edge and I felt much more confident about the fit, so far no leaks. I also opened the restrictor up to 3/8” from 1/4". It was probably unnecessary but I figured it couldn’t hurt. I now have a slight rpm change when I remove the oil cap but it will still idle fine. I didn’t get the original seal from PP and I’m not sure what the actual part number was so I can’t say for sure if it was the right one or not, but I assume it was the correct 964 seal. I’ve only driven another 4 miles around the neighborhood but I will definitely be stretching it’s legs more throughout the week. HooWoo! |
Congratulations, Ryan. Are you bringing that beast out for the Mulholland run on the 13th?
|
that's good news Ryan :) !
|
I wish! I promised a buddy, about two months ago, that I would help him move that day. Unless I "strain my back" between now and then, I'm out.
I wont be able to make it on Jan 21 either, damn! I talked to Tyson and will be looking into the dates for the Streets series. I’m ready to get out there. Did I mention that I’m getting good at engine removal & installation? :) |
Something funny…
When I took it for the first drive around the block tonight, it felt as if the clutch was slipping. I tried to give it more power and nothing. Hmm, if the clutch was slipping the rmps would climb or something. I readjusted the clutch but it was right on, checked everything else I could think of and nothing. The thought of laying into the gas and nothing happening kept jumping out at me. “Are you sure you were in first gear?” a little voice asked. Nope, sure wasn’t. This thing is a dog when you start in third gear from a stop. Readjusted the coupler and amazingly I have power again, who knew? |
Well, good news. Let's hear a report of what it was like to drive...

So, post some video of that bad boy running! -B |
Last post from Ryan at 12:23 a.m. I guess he went for a drive and hasn't come back yet...

LOL Thomas! I only have 8.? miles on her so far so it would be hard to give a good driving impression. I’m leaving work early today so I can go test her out.
In the short amount of driving I’ve done so far, WOW! The power is so strong and so smooth throughout the entire rpm range. It pulls at 3000 like my 3.0 did at 5500. I feel like I wont really know what it can do until I get it out on the track, it gets up and moves so fast that anything after third gear, or 6 seconds, which ever comes first, is just asking for trouble. I look forward to feeling how it handles in the twisties. I won’t be able lay into the gas coming out of a turn as soon as I did w/ the 3.0. More to follow. |
sounds as thought your new rear main seal is Viton instead of regular rubber. Viton make a much better seal or o-ring for sealing in high temp areas
have fun! |
Here is an update from tonight. Driving impressions
|
Ryan I have only put a 150 miles on my 3.6 due to a knock in the motor, but it is very hard to be humble when you drive one, the guys that have been knocking this conversion dont have a clue just how nice they are, lets just hope the knock is only a rocker arm backed off, and its to cold here to work on it, Kevin

I'm glad to hear everything is working. Can't wait to see and hear it!
