I've got a couple of things to add to this excellent thread. If you can, let your old steering wheel find its center prior to taking it off. Mine was slight misaligned so I made sure the tires were tracking straight (my steering wheel was a few degrees off) before I removed it and centered the new hub. I thought the hub adaptor screws that were included were okay, used blue locktite on them. I'd suggest threading those screws in a bit first, taking them out, and then mounting the horn ring. They aren't easy to get started through the ring and are probably easy to cross up. I did the same thing with the allen screws on the hub, started all of them and turned them 2-3 turns with each screw before I mounted the hub. The allen screws are painted and pretty tight the first few turns. It's much easier to get them started once the hub is mounted and you're holding the wheel if they've been started once already. Use a better allen key if you have one, the MOMO supplied piece isn't good quality.
I was lucky, my stock wheel broke free pretty easily so I could hold it with one hand while pulling down on a 1/2" breaker with the other. A second person for this part would have made it a bit easier, but don't assume that it's totally necessary and you might get lucky. I used the longer MOMO hub that Pelican sells, and I have a perfect view of the tach (I'm 5"11") and a partially obscured view of the speedo over 60mph, which doesn't bother me in the least. This is really one of the best and cheapest mods you can make for feel and look in these cars. |
Quick question to an amazing thread?
My car has a Momo 07 wheel that the PO installed. I have the orig wheel and noticed now that the little plastic piece with the 3 screws and plastic tap is still on the Orig wheel. Is this tab what kicks the turn sig off after a turn? If so I should install it? |
Yes, that’s the piece that cancels the turn signal. Do your signals cancel? I ask because I ordered a hub for an older 911 on accident (smaller diameter splines than my ‘84) and noticed that it had the tab built into the bottom of the hub.
The tab is easy to install, just follow the directions on this thread. Quote:

The later hubs (collapsible) for early porsches have indeed the turn signal cancel ring built in. The earlier version, the solid ones, they dont.
Hubs for later type 911, >1974, are available with or without the signal cancel ring. But they were never made with a built-in type, as for the earlier model. |
