Feedback On My Dream

How's this for a plan,

I am toying with the idea of restoring a semi rusted 73' 911t to an RS replica. I would remove the engine and replace it with the massaged 3.4 from my Carrera.

In the interem, I am loving the look of the RUF yellowbird and would convert my 87' to a RUF yellowbird look alike, dropping a 3.6 into it.

The Carrera is guards red so it would be more like a "Redbird"
The 73' Would end up Guards red with black Script. I think these cars would be like odd twins and lot of fun to drive.

Does anyone see any major flaws in my plan, i.e. the 3.4 won't mate with a 915 or won't fit without major modification? Will a 3.6 be that much more fun than my 3.4? Could this be a nightmare of a project?

I plan on doing most of the work myself.

Any feedback is appreciated.

CJ...

Dude...post pics or make a website...these are the things that i love to read about. I see no flaws in your plan...but it does look like alot of work and alot of money. Especially if you are going to do these projects concurently. Personally, i would RUF the 87 and leave the 3.4 since it seems you have that already sorted. Then drop the 3.6 in the RS Replica...lighter car and wicked fast! JMHO. Either way, Please post pics and keep the board updated. I dont think there is a person here that doesnt enjoy following a project such as yours. I cant wait to have the time and space to do one of my own.

I share your dream but dont have the funds. Maybe someday. Anyway, like Kemo said keep us posted and plug the 3.6 into the '73!

I will definately post pics, as soon as I figure out how reduce the file size. I think the RUF conversion will be relatively inexpensive if I keep the 3.4 in it. Both bumper covers are around $1000, It's the wheels that will kill you. I know, I know they are heavy but man they look so good. My 3.4 has the dansk 2 in 2 out and is loud and a little raw. I just thought that it might be a little more appropriate for the RS conversion, just a thought.

im sure you can make a 3.6 just as loud and just as raw! 300HP in a lightweight 73...eating rice all day long...scare the pants off a honda!

Personally I'd leave the 3.4 in the Carerra and drop the 3.6 in the 73. First, that'd be a lot less work and second, you'd still have a nice Carerra as a daily ride. Performance gain from swapping a strong 3.4 to a stock 3.6 doesn't seem like it would be worth all the effort, and you'd have one bad A$$ RS-clone!!

I see no flaws in your plan, except that I don't have the money to do the same. Either way you can't lose, I'd put the 3.6 in the '73 because that car would be an animal, keep your Carrera as the semi-civilized one. Plus, that way you can drive it while you work on the '73, there's nothing worse than being 911-less.

Kemo,

Where did you source your mirrors and wheels? What size are they? What are we looking at dollar-wise?

Eric,

Weren't you doing a RUF conversion? I know You are into lightweight so wouldn't the RUF bumpers take off some pounds?

Yeah I am still wanting to go that way.....
I am trying to do things on a budget and the bumpers and add on tid bit are all on theback burner..
I am really on reducing the weight of the over all car at this point.
making it as light as i can and then when it's time i will have saved up enough to score the RUF bumpers and all the littlle tid bits .i.e. mirrors and wheels to top off the look.
and a nice paint job to finish the entire project.. then the last thing will be the 3.8 ltr motor to make it smoke this pisss out of Turbo cars!!!!!!!!!!!!
but yeah in time i'll start to convert the car over to the RUF yellow Bird look.
but i have other things right now more important like suspension and and stuff..
looks come last..
Eric

It'll all go together fine in either chassis. There won't be much difference betweeen a built 3.4 and stock 3.6. The 3.6 will be a little torquier and more flexible is all. A built 3.6 can easily approach 300/250 and would be a ball in either.

The nice thing about starting w/ a 3.6 is all the room it has to grow.

All it takes is time/money and skill

I got my mirrors from Better Bodies. Fortunately, the wheels came with the car when i bought it about 4 yrs ago. I dont think the wheels are available anymore...you may have to buy used. I saw some on Ebay recently...NOT CHEAP! Seems like these wheels are appreciating... I think mine are 17x9 in the rear and 17x7 in the front...but i would have to look.
