Fan touching housing,
My 911SC (11-blade fan) very slightly touches the fan housing at the bottom left hand side (wear marks). While I was replacing the belt I noticed that the fan has a little radial play. What's the cause, and what's the cure?

Your alternator bearings are shot. Replace them FAST. A little play becomes a lot of wiggle in a hurry. If the bearings are not fixed in time, the wobble will ruin the brushes in the alternator and you'll get to replace that, too! (Ask me how I know!)

Two potential causes -
More common: Worn-out bearings in the alternator (replace alt). Due to the radial play you mentioned, sounds like your winner. Less common: Cracked/deformed fan housing (caused by over-torquing housing strap; requires replacement of housing).

I had that problem. I first had the alternator bearings replaced, but that didn't solve it. So, I took a Dremel tool and removed a little of the housing where the fan was hitting. No more noise!

The fan rides on the alternator shaft, it could be time for an R/R of the alternator. Check the bearings and have it all refurbished while it's out.
Cheers

Another possibility is that the alt. is not seating squarely in the fan housing. This would explain the rubbing in only one location?
Just a guess here. If the alt. bearings were shot (which it seems like they are since there's some radial movement), would there be rubbing in more than one location? But since the belt is pulling the alt. in one direction all the time.......... maybe rubbing remains isolated to one place. Just throwing some things out there to think about. Whatever the case may be, a removal of the fan/alt./housing combo. is inevitable.

I was planning on dropping the engine to clean and seal it, plus to do other tidying work in January. It seems this will now happen even sooner. Thanks.
